Introduction
• Soil stabilization
 The term soil stabilization means the improvement in the
properties of poor soils by the use of controlled compaction;
proportioning. and the addition of suitable admixtures or
stabilizers.

 Soil stabilization helps to reduce the risk of natural destruction

which is caused due to rainfall or other aspect

3
• Soil stabilization and its methods
 Mechanical soil stabilization
There are several methods used to achieve mechanical
stabilization.
 Compaction
Compaction is done to increase the soil density by applying
pressure from above.
 Soil Reinforcement
It is the method of enhancing or improving the soil strength to
carry more load.

4
 Addition of graded aggregate materials

This method helps to increase strength of the soil and helps in

decreasing plasticity.

 Mechanical Remediation

This is a technique where contaminated soil is physically

removed and relocated to a place far from centres of human
population.

5
Chemical Stabilization
In this method improving of engineering properties of soil is
done by adding chemicals.
The machines used to combine the additives with the soil are,
 Rotary Mixer
It is a large mixing chamber that is equipped with a rotor
designed to break up and mix the materials.
 Pugmill
It is also a large mixing chamber that resembles a cement
mixer to mix the materials.

6
Need For Soil Stabilization
• Soil stabilization improves load bearing capacity; soil stabilization with
lime or cement result in immediate improvement of soil’s mechanical
properties.
• Optimum moisture content; soil that were muddy and wet before
stabilization are now much better suited for handling, placing and
compacting.
• Improved weather condition; soil stabilization results in improved
soil’s bearing capacity both in short and long term, making it resistant
against water and frost.
• Soil stabilization is used to improve on-site materials for a solid and
strong sub-base.

7
 Black cotton soil
• In terms of geotechnical Engineering, Black Cotton soil is
one which when associated with as engineering structure

• In presence of water black cotton soil will show tendency

to swell or shrink causing the structure to experience
moments which are largely unrelated to the direct effect
of loading by the structure.

8
Plastic wastes
 Plastics waste is of two types
1. Pre-use plastic (production scrap)

The plastic which does not fulfil the desired requirement

during casting and assembly .This plastic is not suitable for
recycling.

2. Post-use plastic

Post-use plastic waste suitable for recycling Plastic

bottles, pots, tubs and trays ,Plastic film Rigid plastics etc.

Literature Review
Shivakumar. et al (2016) entitled in the paper "Soil Stabilization
Using Plastic Strips” In this paper the stabilization is done by usage
of plastic strips.

 In this plastic was made in to strips mixed with black cotton soils in
different proportions by dry weight of the soils.

 The results showed that there is appreciable increase in strength

and CBR value for the black cotton soils by the addition of plastic
strips.

 The method can be used for construction of pavements for village

roads. 10
Dr. Dhatrak. A.et al (2015) entitled in the paper “Performance of

Randomly Oriented Plastic Waste in Flexible Pavement".

 In this paper the soil stabilization is done by using waste plastic

bottles chips for improvement of sub grade soil of pavement used

for construction of flexible pavement.

 The common results from this is increase in shear strength,

unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength of the soil.

This research is mainly to control plastic waste pollution.

11
 Objectives
• To increase the density and California Bearing Ratio
(CBR) of soil using plastic as an admixture.

• To provide an alternative solution for the disposal of

plastic waste.

• To provide an economical solution for soil stabilization

using plastic waste.

• To determine the optimum plastic content to be used.

12
Materials And Methodology
Materials
The materials that are use for the study are

 Black cotton soil

 Plastic waste

13
Methodology
Following laboratory tests have been carried out as per IS: 2720. The
tests were carried out both on natural soil and stabilized soil with
plastic strips.
• Differential Free Swell index –IS 2720 Part-XI, 1972.
• Grain size analysis – IS 2720 Part 4, 1985
• Specific gravity - IS 2720 Part-3, 1980
• Liquid limit - IS 2720 Part-5, 1985
• Proctor Compaction – IS 2720 Part-8, 1983
• CBR test – IS 2720 Part-16, 1987
• Unconfined compression – IS 2720 Part-10, 1991
• Direct Shear test - IS: 2720 Part-13, 1986

Conclusions
Black cotton soils when blended with plastic strips are very promising
to improve the geotechnical properties. This will provide solution for
the use of locally available black cotton soil.
• It can be observed that MDD gradually increases and getting optimum value
for the soil sample 3 as compared with natural black cotton soil.

• It can be observed that OMC gradually decrease with increase in plastic

content.

• It can be observed that CBR value is gradually increases and getting maximum
value compared with natural black cotton soil.

• It can be observed that UCS results gives good compressive at soil sample 3
