Lecture 1 - Introduction of CRE

This document discusses chemical reaction engineering (CRE), which studies chemical reaction rates, mechanisms, and reactor design. CRE is important for selecting efficient and safe reaction systems, as inefficient systems can make entire processes uneconomical. Key topics covered are reaction rates and rate-limiting steps, and sizing reactors to meet production goals. Examples discussed are ethylene production via catalytic cracking of ethane in high-temperature tubular reactors, and growing large quantities of stem cells for applications. The document outlines that mole balances, conversion and reactor sizing, rate laws and stoichiometry, and reaction systems are important CRE sequences to consider.

CHEMICAL REACTION ENGINEERING

BNQ 20304

DR. MAZATUSZIHA AHMAD

Introduction
 Chemical Reaction Engineering (CRE) is the field
that studies the rates and mechanisms of chemical
reactions and the design of the reactors in which they
take place.
 Chemical Process Industries (CPI) that Draw Heavily
on (CRE) are: Dow, DuPont, Titan

 Why CRE is important?........
 Selection of a reaction system that operates in the safest
and most efficient, is the key to the economic success or
failure of chemical plant.
Example : reaction system produced a large amount of undesirable
product, that need purification/separation- entire process
economically unfeasible.

 Focused on..
1) The rate at which chemical reaction take place,
2) The mechanism and rate limiting steps that control the
reaction process.
3) Sizing of chemical reactors to achieve production
goals. (reactor design)
•Ethylene is used for
