Semi Synthetic

Semi-synthetic fibers are made from naturally occurring polymers like cellulose that are then modified through chemical processes, unlike completely synthetic fibers which are synthesized entirely in a lab. The earliest semi-synthetic fiber is rayon, which is made from regenerated cellulose. Some common types of semi-synthetic fibers include rayon, acetate fabric, and Tencel, which is a type of lyocell made from wood pulp in an environmentally friendly process.

Semi-Synthetic

• Semi-synthetic fibers are made from raw materials with naturally

long-chain polymer structure and are only modified and partially
degraded by chemical processes, in contrast to completely synthetic
fibers such as
o nylon (polyamide)
o or dacron (polyester),
• Which the chemist synthesizes from low-molecular weight
compounds by polymerization (chain-building) reactions.
• The earliest semi-synthetic fiber is the cellulose regenerated fiber,
rayon.
• Most semi-synthetic fibers are cellulose regenerated fibers .
Acetate Fabric

• Made from the cellulose and obtained by reconstructing

cotton or wood pulp. Acetate fabric is resistant to
shrinkage, moth and mildew. Acetate fabric is fabric
which gives extremely soft and luxurious look just like
silk fabric.
Rayon

• Rayon is a manufactured fiber made from regenerated

cellulose fiber. The many types and grades of rayon can
imitate the feel and texture of natural fibers such as silk,
wool, cotton, and linen. The types that resemble silk are
often called artificial silk.
Tencel

• Lyocell, better known as Tencel, is a fiber made from the wood pulp
of trees that are grown and replaced on specialized tree farms.
Unlike most cellulosic fabrics, Tencel is produced using recyclable,
Earth-friendly solvents. When blended with cotton, Tencel adds
wrinkle-resistance and the lustrous feel of a silk.
