Math Assessment

1. There will be 262,144 (218) bacteria at the end of six hours for type A bacteria that doubles every 15 minutes. 2. For type B bacteria that doubles every 30 minutes, there will be 4,096 (212) bacteria at the end of six hours. 3. The number of bacteria increases exponentially based on the doubling time, with type A bacteria that double more frequently reaching a higher number faster than type B bacteria.

Problems and Solutions

A problem that I encountered was that some

of the equations contained negative numbers.
A solution to this is to revise the integer rules
and practice them.

Another problem is that some of the equations

contained BOMDAS along with negative
numbers. A solution to this is to practice them
and revise the rules.
TASK 2
‘Always 22’
1.
Instructions Write
Think of any three numbers from 0-9. 5, 9, 2
Make all possible two-digit pairs. 59, 52, 92, 95, 29, 25
Add all the pairs to get A. 59+52+92+95+29+25 = 352
Add together the original numbers to get B. 5+9+2 = 16
Divide A by B. 352/16 = 22

2.
Instructions Write
Think of any three numbers from 0-9. 7, 1, 3
Make all possible two-digit pairs. 71, 73, 13, 17, 31, 37
Add all the pairs to get A. 71+73+13+17+31+37 = 242
Add together the original numbers to get B. 7+1+3 = 11
Divide A by B. 242/11 = 22
3. Instructions Write
Think of any three numbers from 0-9. 6, 8, 4
Make all possible two-digit pairs. 68, 64, 84, 86, 48, 46
Add all the pairs to get A. 68+64+84+86+48+46 = 396
Add together the original numbers to get B. 6+8+4 = 18
Divide A by B. 396/18 = 22

This number trick works as the answer is always 22.

a=6 b=8 c=4
Instructions Write
Think of any three numbers from 0-9. a, b, c
Make all possible two-digit pairs. 10a+b, 10a+c, 10b+a, 10b+c, 10c+b, 10c+a
Add all the pairs to get A. 10a+10a+a+a = 22a
10b+10b+b+b = 22b
10c+10c+c+c = 22c
A = 22a+22b+22c = 22(a+b+c)
Add together the original numbers to get B. a+b+c = B
Divide A by B. A/B = 22(a+b+c)/a+b+c
22(a+b+c)/a+b+c = 22
∴ 22
The answer is…
Instructions Write
Think of a number. 12
Double it. 12*2 = 24
Add 10. 24+10 = 34
Divide by 2. 34/2 = 17
Take away the number you started with. 17–12 = 5
The answer is… 5

Instructions Write
Think of a number. -3
Double it. -3*2 = -6
Add 10. -6+10 = 4
Divide by 2. 4/2 = 2
Take away the number you started with. 2 – -3 = 5
The answer is… 5
Instructions Write
Think of a number. 0.7
Double it. 0.7*2 = 1.4
Add 10. 1.4+10 = 11.4
Divide by 2. 11.4/2 = 5.7
Take away the number you started with. 5.7 – 0.7 = 5
The answer is… 5

a=12
Instructions Write
Think of a number. a
Double it. a+a
=2a
Add 10. 2a+10
Divide by 2. (2a+10)/2
=a+5
Take away the number you started with. a+5 – a
The answer is… 5
The size of the number does not matter unless it is a
negative number. The smaller the negative number,
the higher the end number will be.

It can be a negative but only to a certain point. If the

number gets any smaller, then it won’t equal 5
anymore.

The number can be a decimal. Unlike negative

numbers, it doesn’t matter how small the decimal gets.
