    CHEMICAL PROPERTY

     Chemical property: ability of matter to react with


    another substance to form one or more new substances
     It can only be observed when a substance chemically
    interacts, or reacts, with another substance
     Combustibility describes the ability
    for a material to catch fire and burn

    REACTIVITY

     Reactivity with oxygen is a chemical property


     Substances like food change colour when exposed to the air
    (avocadoes, apples, bananas etc.)
     Different substances are formed to give that food a brown colour

     Reactivity with acids is a chemical property


     Some substances react vigorously with acids and others do
    not
     Presence of bubbles can be an observation for reaction with
    acids
     Ex) gas forms when baking soda is mixed with vinegar
    EXAMPLES OF CHEMICAL PROPERTIES –
    LACK OF REACTIVITY

     Substances that do not react with other


    substances are called “inert”
     Noble gases of the periodic table are
    inert: helium, argon, kryton, xenon, neon,
    and radon

     Matter can be described by its physical and chemical properties

     It can also be described based on physical and chemical changes
    PHYSICAL CHANGES

     Physical changes: change of matter that does


    not alter its chemical identity or composition
     When a substance changes from one state to
    another, the physical change is known as a change
    of state
     Ex) ice melting, crumpling a piece of aluminum
