Algebraic solution
Linear inequalities solution.
• We have the inequality: 5 2𝑥 + 1 − 3𝑥 + 4 ≥ 2 𝑥 − 2 − 2𝑥 − 1
• First lets clear the bracket :10𝑥 + 5 − 3𝑥 + 4 ≥ 2𝑥 − 4 − 2𝑥 − 1
• Then we must simplify by putting common factors together:
• 10𝑥 − 3𝑥 − 2𝑥 + 2𝑥 ≥ −5 − 4 − 4 − 1
• Now lets calculate it to solve the inequality:
• 7𝑥 ≥ −14 so 𝑥 ≥ −2
-2
Quadratic inequalities solution
• We have the inequality:4𝑥 3𝑥 + 2 − 𝑥 < 3 1 + 3𝑥 2 − 7
• Clear the brackets: 12𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 − 𝑥 < 3 + 9𝑥 2 − 7
• Then group up common factors:12𝑥 2 − 9𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 − 𝑥 < 3 − 7
• Now simplify until its possible: 3𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 < −4
• Make the inequality <0 : 3𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 + 4 < 0
• Then we are going to factorize it: 3𝑥 + 4 𝑥 + 1 < 0
−4
• Lets solve it: 3𝑥 + 4 < 0 then 𝑥 < and 𝑥 + 1 < 0 is 𝑥 < −1
3
• Ok so now lets us check if the values are correct:
−4
• We will add into the inequality and we should get -0.33<0 so this
3
one is correct and then lets add -1. we will get -1<0 which will prove
that we have the values that correspond to the inequality.
Method for Solving Linear Inequalities
Graphically
1. Y >= 2x + 1 2. Y < -x + 4
To plot line 1, treat the inequality as an equation of the line. Where 2 is the
gradient (2/1) and +1 is y- intercept.
Use this same procedure for line 2 where the co-efficient of –x is -1, which is
the gradient (-1/1).
Next, choose any point on the line and plug into the inequality to make it
satisfies the inequality. Vice versa for second line
(0,3) –: 3 >= 2(0) + 1, 3>= 1
(0,3) -: 3 < -1(0) + 4, 3 < 4
Making sure that the inequalities satisfy the criteria. If it is greater than
shade above line, If it is less shade below. I there is an equal to sign then the
line is solid if not it is a dashed line.
