Gibson Incision

• Mainly used to
access
lower/distal part of
ureter
Steps
• Supine position
• Incision was made 1
inch medial to ASIS,
running 1 inch above
inguinal ligament, to
pubic symphisis
When to use Gibson Incision ?
• Renal transplant, to afford less traumatic and
convenient access to iliac fossa and bladder
• Laparoscopic surgery, used as access for non-dominant
hand
• Open nephroureterectomy, to split rectus fascia and
develop space of Retzius, used in distal ureterectomy
• To remove renal specimen from entrapment sac, in
kidney excision
• In ureteral stricture repair and ureterolysis, to
provide ample exposure for mid-ureteral
stricture
• In ureteroureterostomy and
transureteroureterostomy, for mid and lower
ureteral injuries
