History

Ancient Music 1200BC- 500AC

 Greek Mythology Music, very much driven by different


cults at the time.
 Predominately used a Lyre
 5-7 strings, stretched across the frame of a tortoise shell.
 Played as a solo instrument or accompanied singing.

Music in the Middle Ages – Medieval
Music (450 – 1450)
Began when the Roman Empire was disintegrating, it was during a time of migrations,
upheaval and wars.
Towards the end of this period, there was cultural growth – Churches and Monasteries
were constructed, towns began to grow and universities were founded.
Most music was vocal, the church frowned upon the use of instruments.
Instrumental music did exist though, serving as accompaniment.

Three main social classes:


Nobles: Sheltered within castles, knights engaged in combat during wars.
Peasants: vast majority of the populations, they lived in one rooms huts.
Clergy: People who had a role in the church.

Renaissance Period (1450-1600)

 It is the ‘rebirth’ of human creativity.


 A period of exploration and adventure.
 Age of curiosity and individualism – Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519).
 Every educated person was EXPECTED to be trained in music.
 Renaissance composers wrote music to enhance the meaning and
emotion of the text – medieval composers weren’t interested in this AT ALL.
Renaissance Period (1450-1600)

Baroque Period (1600—1750)

 The word Baroque can mean: bizarre, flamboyant and elaborately


ornamented.
 A ‘scientific approach’ to music - a complex mix of rationalism, sensuality,
materialism and spirituality.
 Music can be instrumental or choral.
 Famous Composers: Handel and J.S. Bach.

Classical Period (1750-1820)

 Shares values with the Ancient Greeks


who pursued the idea of beauty, clarity
and proportion.
 Concerned with balance, structure and
precision in their compositions.
 Established the principles of SONATA

 Recapitulation

The Romantic Period (1830-1920)

 Age of the Individual, of the common man becoming important.


 Originality and creative ego were prized qualities.
 Golden age of ‘Virtuoso’ – what does this mean?
 Emotional Range was very important! Stark contrast to both the Baroque
and Classical Periods.
 Key Composers: Beethoven, Schumann, Wagner, Brahms etc.
The Romantic Period (1830-1920)

The Modern Era (1920-Present)

 Composers are trying to create edgy, experimental music that is radically


different to that of the past centuries.
 Composers are breaking all the rules!

 Incorporated Aboriginal like qualities in his music as well as western
harmonies.
