Parasites residing in river systems can be indicators
of an ecosystem’s current condition.
Parasite-infected fishes and other freshwater
organisms may pose as a public health concern to
both the people who consume and collect the
organisms.

✖ will not explore other parts of a watershed (Lake,
basins, etc.)
✖ not concerned with other hosts such as intermediate
hosts
✖ June to July sampling only (host sampling only)
✖ No molecular analyses
✔ samples are within the limits of the river system
✔ only helminths and their definitive hosts will be
collected
✔ morphological examination for parasites only

1. To survey Tayabas River for the available freshwater
fauna that can be used as samples.
2. To identify the parasites found inside the dissected
animals.
3. To assess parameters (% P, MI, MA) of parasite burden.

WE THINK THAT…
Parasites are prevalent in freshwater organisms
inhabiting the Tayabas River.
Freshwater animals present in the river system
suggests a healthy ecosystem. Healthy
ecosystems are considered rich in parasites.
