Emission System

The evaporative emission control system prevents gasoline vapors from escaping into the atmosphere from the fuel tank and lines. It stores the vapors in an activated charcoal canister until the engine is warm, when the vapors are purged back into the engine to be burned. The main components are the fuel tank, gas cap, liquid-vapor separator, and activated charcoal canister which stores vapors until the engine can reburn them through the canister purge valve.

Fuel tank : expansion space for fuel to prevent leak or overflow


Gas cap : pressure/ vacuum relief valve
Liquid-Vapor Separator : prevent liquid gasoline from entering the vent line
to the EVAP canister
EVAP Canister :
• small round or rectangular plastic or steel container
• Canister filled with activated charcoal
• Charcoal acts as a sponge and absorbs and stores fuel vapors. The vapors
are stored in the canister until the engine is started, is warm and is being
driven. Charcoal canister is connected to the fuel tank via the tank vent line

Canister purge valve:


The canister purge valve allows stored fuel vapors in the containment
canister to be recycled back into the engine combustion process.
