Pipe Problems
• Pipe flow problems can be classified into different types of problems.
• White has various categories
• I break these up somewhat differently. The problems we’ll see in this class
include
– Unknown shaft power required or extracted from a given system configuration
– Unknown flowrate, Q, for a given system configuration
– Unknown pipe size for a required Q and shaft power
• To attack these problems, one approaches it by…
– Identifying a convenient flow path for a steady, one-dimensional, one inflow and
one outflow problem.
– Write the appropriate energy equation in either pressure or head form…

– Substitute in all the appropriate variables and determine which what terms go to
zero
– Sometimes the solution may require iterations. Flowrate and pipe size problems
usually require this technique. Identify the appropriate iterations that you need to
perform and set up the calculation. Excel spreadsheets are quite useful in
performing iterative solutions. We’ll see that in the examples.
