Task 16 GRAMMARIAN FOR A DAY

He was then tried at the Areiopagus, which
was the ancient Greek court, and banished from
his home city of Athens. He fled to the island of
Crete, where he began to work at the court of King
Minos and Queen Pasiphae, in the magnificent
palace of Knossos.
It is said that Daedalus was the first to
conceive masts and sails for ships for the navy of
Minos, helping Crete become a naval power. The
statues he carved were so exquisite, they looked as
if they were alive. It is said that they would have
escaped were it not for the chain that bound them
to the palace wall.

Daedalus also constructed a wooden cow
for the queen to hide in to satisfy her amorous
longings for a white bull sent by Poseidon.
When the dreadful minotaur was born,
Daedalus built the labyrinth to contain the
monstrous half-man, half-bull. For years, Minos
demanded a tribute of youths from Athens to
feed the creature as punishment for the
accidental killing of his son while he was
visiting Athens.

Eventually, the Athenian hero Theseus
came to Crete to attempt to slay the Minotaur.
Princess Ariadne, daughter of King Minos and
Queen Pasiphae, fell in love with Theseus and
asked Daedalus to help him.
Daedalus gave her a flaxen thread for
Theseus to tie to the door of the labyrinth as
he entered, and by which he could find his
way out after killing the monster. Theseus
succeeded, and escaped Crete with Ariadne.

given list on page 21 of your Learner’s Material.
Explain in three to five sentences how you deal
with that challenge if you encounter it. Use
intensive and reflexive pronouns in your
paragraph. Underline the intensive and reflexive
pronouns you use. Write your answer on ½
crosswise sheet of paper. Submit it tomorrow.
How is your writing skill?

• It should appeal to the readers.

• Appeal – the power to attract the mind or the
emotions
• No matter how valuable a document is, if it is
not able to stimulate its readers to read it, then
it will not serve its purpose at all.
• Your write up must be able to attract attention.
Conviction is appeal to the intellect which
means to encourage your reader to believe what
you have written using factual information, figures /
numbers, and arguments that are valid and logical.
You may use research findings, research
reports, books, newspapers, and other reliable
sources of information.
Persuasion is appeal to the emotion. It is

making your readers believe or accept your ideas
using information that would touch on their
feelings such as joy/happiness, pity, guilt, hunger,
fear, etc.

Building a new home is challenging, but it is the best way for
people to ensure that most of their needs and wants are met within
the confines of their budgets. First of all, many people only
purchase one home during their adult life, so that home should
match closely with the person or couple’s sense of style and
comfort. For example, when building a house, the new owners can
choose the floor plan, carpet, wall coverings, heating system, built-
in appliances and fixtures, as well as lighting and countless other
items, and therefore, have a god chance of being happy with the
final dwelling. In addition, if something can’t be done because of the
structure of the house or the cost or for some other reasons, the
person building the house will be in on the decisions and
understand which may make disappointment easier to bear. Of
course, if the new owners choose a carpet or floor plan that does
not work out, they must take responsibility for the decision. Building
is stressful, but rewards are great.
