International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

 Voluntary international standard body made up of representatives from

140+ countries
 Made up of Tech comm.Sub-commWG
 Standards are first published as Draft Proposals (DPs) from WG
 Once approved they become Draft international standards, post approval
they become international standards
 Data communication standards are handled by ISO technical committee
number 97
 Website: www.iso.ch
ATIS T1

 T1 is amongst the most important standards committee in

telecommunications dealing with data communications and
telecommunications in U.S.
 Established in 1984
 Sponsored by Alliance for telecommunication industry solutions(ATIS)
 Accredited by ANSI
 Standards are developed in close co-ordination with ITU-T
 Focuses on Inter-connection and Inter-operations of
telecommunication networks
 Open membership and balanced participation safeguards integrity
and efficiency of standards formalization process
 Currently has six technical sub-committees that are advised and
managed by T1 Advisory Group( T1AG)
Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

 Formed in 1963 by merger of AIEE and IRE

 Worlds largest professional engineering society
 Standard guides, practices and reference manual
are developed by IEEE to define standards
 Anyone who is sponsored can become a member of
this body which represents engineer community
 E.G: IEEE 802.X standards (Defined by IEEE LAN
Standards committee)
American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

 Acts as an official interface to all international standard

bodies
 Ensures standards are impartial by relying on non-profit, non
governmental organizations such as IEE, EIA.
 ANSI standards define both electronic and industrial standards
for the national and international communities
 Number scheme format: ANSI/NNNN/ XXXX-20XX
 Website: http://www.anis.org
International Telecommunications Union(ITU)

 Formally known as CCITT

 Founded in 1948
 International organization within United Nations system
 Until 1988, ITU published approved recommendations once every four
years in the form of set of books
 After 1988, an accelerated standardization process was adopted
 During study period, questions are assigned to one of 14 study groups
 The Study group is responsible for producing working documents and draft
recommendations
 For ex: Study group 7 is involved with data networks and open
communications, Study group 9 is responsible for broadband cable
networks

Current Forums
 Role of Forums
 Emerged in 1990s
 Not formal standard committees but independent groups
formed by vendors, clients and industry experts
 Ensures interoperability but avoids implantation details
 Essential for success of any standard
 Emphasize on application of new standards
 Generally responsible for testing new standards
 Provides training centers, seminars and interoperability
test labs
Frame Relay Forum
 Formed in January 1991 as a non-profit organization dedicated to
promoting the acceptance and implementation of frame relay based
on National and international standards
 Gang of four- CISCO, Digital equipment corp., Northern telecomm
and StrataCom, Inc. developed frame relay Local Management
Interface specifications
 Organization is divided into 3 groups- Technical, Organizational
and marketing
 Forum submits all its work to ISO which ensures worldwide
interoperability
 Forum is used by frame really users to discuss implementation issues
and drive the standard bodies to implement what users (and
vendors) really require
ATM Forum
 Formed in Oct., 1991by four companies- NorTel, Srint, Sun and DEC
 Membership was opened to industry in 1992
 There are five categorize of membership
 Principal
 Auditing
 User
 Small business
 University affiliate
 Only principal members can participate in techincal and marketing
committee meetings
 Three types of committees are techincal, Marketing and End user
 Branches function in North America, Europe, and Asia
