Holographic Memory: Guided By: Er

Holographic memory is a method of data storage that uses light interference patterns to store and retrieve 3D data. It works by splitting a laser into a source beam and reference beam, using the source beam to encode information onto a photosensitive medium, and using the reference beam to retrieve the information. Holographic memory offers high data capacity and access speeds by storing data in a parallel, 3D format. However, challenges remain in precisely controlling the reference beam angle during retrieval and developing photosensitive materials with the necessary optical properties. Researchers continue working to increase storage capacity and overcome technical hurdles to realize the promising potential of holographic memory technology.

INTRODUCTION
 Scientist Pieter J. van Heerlen first proposed the idea
of holographic storage in 1960 .

Device that uses light to store and read data have been
the backbone of data storage for nearly two decades.

Holographic memory is a method of recording

patterns of light to produce a 3D objects.
ABOUT HOLOGRAPHY
 A holograms is a block of photosensitive material which
records the interference of two light sources.

The laser light is first split into two beams, a source

beam and a reference beam is formed.

 The source beam is then manipulated and sent into the

photosensitive material.

The reference beam interference the laser light recorded

on the photosensitive material, resulting holograms.
CREATING & RETIEVING HOLOGRAM
EXAMPLES
 Bars–codes lines

 Magnetic tapes

 Photographic flims
SPATIAL LIGHT MODULATOR
 A spatial light modulator is used for creating
binary information out of laser light.

Spatial light modulator is a Liquid Crystal Display

panel that consists of clear and dark areas
corresponding to the binary information .

 Spatial light modulator is a device which makes

holography applicable to computers.
HOW DATA IS RCORDED IN MEDIUM
IMPLEMENTATION
Blue –green argon laser

Beam splitter

Mirrors

Lenses

SLM

Lithium niobate crystal

Photo detector
HOLOGRAPHIC MEMORY LAYOUT
POSSIBLE APPLICATION
 High speed transfer

 Large volume

 Data mining

 Peta flop
ADVANTAGES
Holographic memory offers

 High data capacity .

 Short data access time .

 Recorded holograms are stored in parallel

manner.

 High reliability.
CHALLENGES
The retrieval of data of the reference beam has to be
focused at exact angle.

 A slight error can cause a wrong data page to be accessed.

The crystal used as the photographic filament must have

exact optical characteristics .

The data should be error free.

UPDATION
Holographic memory wants to develop the size,
which must be larger than the DVD.

DVD has a capacity of about 100GB. They are trying to

push it up to 1TB.

During recent year companies like IBM,ROCKWELL

are in research for new development of holographic
memory.
CONCLUSION
The future of holographic memory is challenging and
promising.

The holographic memory is most likely to be the next

generation technology.

Comparision to todays world transformation is done

from electronic to magnetic system.
