INTRODUCTION

 Water is the basic need of not only human being but also to animals, plants and all other
beings. No life can exist without water, since water is essential for life as oxygen is. Water is
available from various water resources.

1. Surface resources
2. Subsurface resources

 The project is based on testing the quality of water. Three different samples were
collected from ‘SIT group of hostels’ situated at the campus of SIT Tumkur from
different hostels. And borewells
Objectives
•To gain knowledge about the water being used for drinking in SIT group of
hostels.

•To know the available water is safe or not for drinking.

•To examine the physical and chemical characteristics of the water.

•To compare the water sample test results with the standard permissible limits
•.
•To create awareness to the people if water is not fit for drinking.

• To check whether upgradation of an existing system is required and to decide

what the changes should take place.

parameters are within the permissible limits. This
indicates the tank is not polluted and it can be used for
domestic, irrigation purposes.

METHODOLOGY
Experimental planning:-
In order to study the quality of drinking water different locations will be identified.
The sampling locations will be identified using criteria like prefiltered and postfiltered
water. Basaveshwara block, Lal Bahaddur shasthri block, Mahathma Gandhi block,
Allamaprabhu block, Ganga block and Akkamahadevi block & 9 major borewells are the
locations selected for study.

Sample collection:-
Water samples are to be collected initially from tap and later collected from RO purifier &
Borewells from the above mentioned locations is to be brought to the Environmental
laboratory of S.I.T. maintained with room temperature for the analysis.
The following tests to be conducted for analysing drinking water samples,

1. Acidity & Alkalinity

2. Determination of pH

3. Solids in water

4. Hardness of water

5. Chloride content

6. Fluoride content

7. Nitrate content

8. Iron content

9. Sulphate content

10. Dissolved Oxygen

The solids in water and dissolved oxygen was obtained have a desirable value as
per IS 10500-2012 However, the remaining chemical parameters for the drinking water
distributed into SIT group of hostel area are summarized in below graphs

CONCLUSION
•The drinking water samples tested from SIT group of hostels from the RO purifier have
acceptable limits and desirable values of chemical characteristics of water as specified
by Bureau of Indian standards.
•The RO purified water from LBS and MG block hostel are acidic in nature. Their pH
value is less than the acceptable limit (6.5) as per IS 10500-2012.
•The borewell water samples exceed the permissible limit of contaminants when
compared to the water samples of the hostel blocks.
•Degree of hardness of borewell water is very hard having a hardness value above the
350mg/l.
•Fluoride and sulphate content in RO purified water was zero.
•Hence, the required properties of all the samples collected were analyzed and
compared & appropriate measures were suggested wherever required
