EV204 2 Introduction

This chapter introduces key concepts around structure types, stability, and static determinacy. It discusses common structural elements like beams, trusses, and frames. It also explains that a structure is statically indeterminate if it has too many unknown reactions to solve using equilibrium equations alone. Additionally, the chapter covers the conditions for stability in structures and how a lack of proper constraints can result in partial or improper constraints leading to instability.

Identify Statically Indeterminate Structures
Determinacy :
The ability to compute support reactions using plan statics.

Q: How is determinacy of structure determined?

r = 3m ; b + r > 2j
Q : What are statically indeterminate structures?
If a structure is determinate, the equations of
equilibrium are sufficient to find all forces.
Statically indeterminate structures have too many
reactions to be solved.
What if reactions are too few?
What causes indeterminacy? 3

Stability :
For a coplanar structure, each member must have three
reactions or constraints to satisfy equilibrium, and the members
of the structure cannot form a collapsible mechanism.
Two conditions of when proper constraints are not met:
a) Partial Constraints – member of a structure have fewer
reactive forces than equilibrium equations.
b) Improper Constraints – lines of action of reaction forces
intersect at a common point or are parallel to one another.
