WEEK 14-1 Circular Measure

1. The document discusses various concepts related to circular measure including radians, arc length, chord length, area of sectors, triangles and minor sectors. It provides definitions and formulas for calculating these values. 2. Several examples are worked through applying the concepts and formulas to calculate values like perimeter, area, angles and verifying solutions. Examples include finding the perimeter and area of a segmented circle, calculating angles based on chord lengths, and verifying solutions meet given conditions. 3. Key formulas introduced include the relationships between radians and degrees, arc length formula, chord length formula, formulas for sector area, triangle area and minor sector area. Multiple circular measure concepts and their application to problems are covered.

CIRCULAR MEASURE (P1)

r  Radian

2r 2 Radians, like degrees,
  1 rad are a way of measuring
angles
One radian is equal to the angle formed when the arc
opposite the angle is equal to the radius of the circle
So, in the above diagram, the angle θ is equal to one radian
since the arc AB is the same length as the radius of the circle.
CIRCULAR MEASURE (P1)
Now the circumference of the Therefore,
circle is 2πr, where r is the radius of 360 0  2 rad
the circle. 180 0   rad

So the circumference of a circle is 180
1 rad 
2π larger than its radius 

This means that in any circle, 1 

CIRCULAR MEASURE (P1)
Arc Length
The length of an arc of a circle is equal to rθ where θ is the
angle, in radians, subtended by the arc at the centre of the
circle

The area of a sector of a circle Area  2 r 
is ½r2θ where r is the radius and
θ is the angle in radians
subtended by the arc at the
centre of the circle.
So in the diagram, the shaded
area is equal to ½r2θ
