ABSTRACT
Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID)
the use of radio waves to read and capture information stored on a tag
attached to an object
means of gathering data about a certain item without the need of touching or
seeing the data carrier, through the use of inductive coupling or
electromagnetic waves.
new generation of Auto Identification and Data collection technology which
helps to automate business processes and allows identification of large
number of tagged objects using radio waves.
RFID based Library Management system (LMS) would allow fast transaction flow
for the library and will prove immediate and long term benefits to library in
traceability and security.
The idea of monitoring the library environment from a location and to identify
the materials, books, newspapers and computers present inside the library
for easy access of the library which was observed to be the most common
issue.
The proposed system is based on UHF RFID readers, supported with antennas
at gate and transaction sections, and library cards containing RFID-
transponders which are able to electronically store information that can be
read / written even without the physical contact with the help of radio
medium.
Chapter one
INTRODUCTION
Libraries are present all over the world and they are mostly operational on manual basis. A few have a
man – machine combination. In the last decade the machine has overcome the man in many parts
of the library although the pivotal areas are still monitored by dedicated personnel. But having a
man – machine combination still reduces the efficiency of the system and also account for the
increase in labor cost. It is very true that these counterparts are more efficient than the fully
manual operating Library Systems but a desire for a fully automated system grew up in the last few
years.

RFID came as an aid in the search for fully automated systems. It’s not-in-sight-but-still can be

detected technology came very handy while designing powerful, efficient systems which had very

little manual interventions. In this project, we have tried to design such an automated Library

Management System with the aid of said RFID technology. Another technology that can reduce

human effort significantly was the bar – code system, which is still in use vastly due to

inexpensiveness with respect to the RFID systems. Quests for Cheaper RFID system are still on and

perhaps when it will be realized; most libraries will be converted into a fully automated one
RFID technology is being implemented in a number of
industries. Supply chain implementation is perhaps one of the
most frequently mentioned applications of RFID tags and
equipment.
In libraries, items are taken out and returned many times.
Thus the same RFID tag is re-used many times.
The libraries across the globe started to use RFID to speed up
the self-check in/out processes, to control the theft and to ease
the inventory control in library. The barcode technology is
slowly getting replaced by the RFID technology. The RFID
tag does not have to be visible for detection. It can be read
even when it is embedded in an item, such as in the cardboard
cover of a book or in the packaging of a product. It can also
store data such as stack number, accession number, book
number, author information etc., but barcode is limited to just
an identification number.

◦ Problem Statement
Problems in FASIL campus library:
 operated manually

 misplacement of items
 mis shelving of books
 the library staff is complex
 difficult for searching specific books
 card based issue of books
 lack of security control
 difficulty in tracing of books and library members
Solutions for problems occurred in the library
management system
 To simplify customer self-check-out / check-I
 For Radio Frequency anti-theft detection
 innovative and safe.
 To allow better accuracy in book collection
management, resulting in reduced book purchase
 To Improve staff productivity
 For Faster Circulation
 To minimize the manual errors
OBJECTIVES
GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
 To design and develop RFID based library
management system(LMS) for Fasil Compus

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

 To Simplify Searching Of Library Resource

 Accessing number of books at a time
 Searching a particular book to check its presence
in the library
 Locating the physical location of the book
 Simplify customer self-check-out / check-in.
BENEFICIARY BODY OF THE PROJECT
 Students
 Librarians
 Staff administrators
 Instructors and other users
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
RFID improves
 tracking of books & documents
 reduces management costs
 book sorting and theft deterrence
 increases efficiency & productivity
 The implementation of this project is proceeded up
to running the simulation due to limitation in
accessing the materials like RFID module reader or
scanner
CHAPTER THREE
Literature review/related works
 RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology is
an
automatic identification system consisting of a tag
and a reader which can communicate with radio
waves.
 RFID technology can find aide range of application
areas in many sectors. Such as automotive,
logistics, retail, healthcare and libraries.
 There are some companies which used RFID
technology
Alien Technology
 UHF(ultra-high frequency)
 active RFID tags,
 mobile readers
 for item tagging
 transportation
Checkpoint System
 retail industry
 encompassing loss prevention
 merchandise visibility
 innovative high-theft
 market-leading RFID hardware & software
 comprehensive labeling capabilities
 secure and track merchandise from source to
shelf.
Limitations of the above companies
 Used active type of RFID tags(powered battery)
 Mostly used RFID system for investment and
marketing (not for security purpose)
 RFID inlays or RFID labels tags are not readable, if
applied to metal surface. Better to use plastic
inlays
To improve the above limitations by:-
 Using passive RFID tags (no need battery source)
 Since RFID reader and tag have coil and antenna
respectively. The coil and antenna generates an
electromagnetic waves which produce radio
frequency energy.
 Using high frequency less than UHF
 Selecting materials with low cost
CHAPTER FOUR
METHDOLOGY
Hardware requirement
 ATmega32 microcontroller
 6x2 LCD module
 LED
 EM-18 (RFID reader module)
 L293D motor driver IC
 5V DC motor
Software requirement
 Atmel studio 6.1
 Proteus

Systems of methods used in this project are

 Design the circuit diagram by drag and drop
 Design the schematic capture on electronics circuit
 Simulate the circuit to check whether it is properly
working or not
Overall Operation
 The primary aim of the research is to uniquely
identify Individual students based on their unique
tag identifiers [3].
 When a student enters class, the RFID reader reads
his/her student ID card.
 When student enters into library , RFID reader
reads the student ID same as attendance and only
allow authenticate students in the library
 Whenever an authorized card is brought near the
module, the LCD display the card number, the LED
blinks and the motor is programmed to move
clockwise 90 degree for a second, to show the
classroom gate is opened, and after a second it
comes back, telling the room gate is closed.
