The document discusses a Buchholz relay, which is a device installed in the pipework between a transformer tank and conservator that detects abnormal gas and oil conditions within the tank. It functions by tilting a mercury switch contact when gas fills the tank, completing a trip circuit to open the circuit breaker. A Buchholz relay provides simple transformer protection by detecting gas, oil surges, and complete oil loss. While advantageous for early fault detection, it can only be used on oil-immersed transformers with conservators and detects faults below the oil level.

Name: Wan Mohd Shahrulfarh Bin Wan Shamsuddin
Student ID: EP078782 Lecturer: Prof. Madya Dr. Izham Bin Zainal Abidin What is Buchholz Relay? • Buchholz relay is a device that operated with oil and gas and install IN the pipework between top of the main transformer tank and the conservator • The function is to detect abnormal condition within the tank and send a tripping signal. • It is a transformer protector. Functions
Normal condition – relay full of oil
Fault occur – Gas fill in the main tank. The oil in
the main tank rushes towards the conservator via the Buchholz relay and in doing so it tilts the flap to close the contacts of mercury switch. This completes the trip circuit to open the circuit breaker controlling the transformer. Installation of Buchholz Relay Actual Pictures of Buchholz Relay
A – Gas Collection Chamber B – Upper float
C - Lower float D – Oil surge detector Condition detected • The relay will detect: Gas produces within transformer An oil surge from the tank to the conservator A complete loss of oil Advantages and Disadvantages • Advantages: Simplest form of transformer protection Detects the slow developing faults at a stage much earlier than other forms of protection. • Disadvantages: Can only be used with oil immersed transformers equipped with conservators Can detect only faults below oil leveling the transformer Refferences • http://www.transformerworld.co.uk/buchholz .htm • http://electricalandelectronics.org/2009/03/1 9/buchholz-relay/
