Chapter 1

This document discusses the design of shear reinforcement in reinforced concrete beams. It explains that beams can experience both bending moments and shear forces, and shear failure can be sudden and brittle. The design aims to ensure the shear strength equals or exceeds the flexural strength. There are three design values related to shear strength: VRd,c without shear reinforcement, VRd,s with shear reinforcement, and VRd,max limited by crushing. Minimum shear reinforcement is required even if VEd ≤ VRd,c. Formulas are provided to calculate VRd,c based on concrete properties and reinforcement area.

Design of Shear
 In addition to pure bending case, beams
are often subjected to transverse loads
which generate both bending moments
M(x) and shear forces V(x) along the
beam.
 Shear failure is frequently sudden and
brittle, the design for ensure that shear
strength equals or exceeds the flexural
strength at all points in the beam.

Design of Shear
 VRd,c is the design shear resistance of the member
without shear reinforcement.
 VRd,s is the design value of the shear force which
can be sustained by the yielding shear
reinforcement.
 VRd,max is the design value of the maximum shear
force which can be sustained by the member,
limited by crushing of the compression struts.
 Ved is applied shear force, checked at d from
face of support.
Members not requiring
design shear reinforcement
 In regions of the member where VEd≤VRd,c no
calculated shear reinforcement is necessary.
No shear reinforcement is required,minimum
shear reinforcement should nevertheless be
provided according to 9.2.2.

NEd is the axial force in the cross-section due to
