Do Now: Find The Domain and Range of The Following and Write Your Answer in Interval Notation

The document outlines the objectives and agenda for a calculus class, including reviewing functions, describing basic function classes like polynomials, rational, algebraic, exponential and trigonometric functions, and learning how to sketch graphs using translation and scaling. It also assigns homework problems from sections P6 to P7 in the textbook.

C6: Describe the basic classes
of functions.
It would be near impossible to
describe all the functions out there.
Luckily, in calculus, our methods only
work on functions that are sufficiently
“well-behaved”. The following are the
families we will be studying:
1. Polynomials
2. Rational
3. Algebraic
4. Exponential
5. Trigonometric
C6: Describe the basic classes
of functions.
•Polynomials

For any real number m, the function

is called a power function.

A polynomial is a sum of multiples of

power functions with whole number
exponents.
C6: Describe the basic classes
of functions.
•Polynomials

The general form of a polynomial is:

- The numbers are called coefficients.

- The degree of P(x) is n (assuming ).
- The coefficient is called the leading coefficient.
- The domain of P(x) is R.
C6: Describe the basic classes
of functions.
Polynomials

Is f(x) = x + x-1 a polynomial? Why not?

Example:
C6: Describe the basic classes
of functions.
•Rational
  Functions

A rational function is a quotient of two

polynomials.
C6: Describe the basic classes
of functions.
Rational Functions

Analyze this statement: “Every

polynomial is a rational function, but not
every rational function is a polynomial.”
C6: Describe the basic classes
of functions.
•Algebraic
  Functions

An algebraic function is produced by

taking sums, products, and quotients
of roots of polynomials and rational
functions.

Example:
C6: Describe the basic classes
of functions.
•Algebraic
  Functions

In general, algebraic functions are

defined by polynomial equations
between x and y. This means y is
implicitly defined as a function of x.

of functions.

of functions.
•Exponential
  Functions

The function where b > 0, is called

the exponential function with base b.

The most common exponential

function in calculus is (e is the
decimal by the door).
C6: Describe the basic classes
of functions.
Trigonometric Functions

Functions built from sin(x) and cos(x)

are trigonometric functions.

Sine, cosine, tangent, cotangent,

secant, and cosecant.

We will get to these soon…

C6: Describe the basic classes
of functions.
Constructing New Functions

By taking the sum, difference,

product, quotient, or composition of
these basic families of functions, all*
the functions we will see in calculus
can be created. We call these
creations “elementary functions”.
C6: Describe the basic classes
of functions.
Summary:
• All the functions we will see can be
created from combining the families
of functions here.
C7: Sketch graphs using
translation and scaling.
