Recessed Downlights: Common Luminaire Types

Recessed downlights are light fixtures installed into hollow openings in ceilings. They come in round or square shapes and provide direct illumination. They are suitable for general lighting in residential and commercial spaces as well as accent lighting. Recessed downlights can be equipped with various lamp types and have different trim styles. Proper spacing depends on the light source, with area sources spaced using a 1.0 criterion and point sources using a 0.5 criterion. Ceiling height also impacts spacing and fixture selection.

◉ Thermally Protected (T) luminaires are used in most commercial
applications with a dropped ceiling and no nearby insulation.
◉ Insulated Ceiling (IC) applications occur where the luminaire is intended
to be in contact with insulation. IC housings are typically used in homes,
especially in ceilings with attics above.
◉ Damp Location luminaires can be exposed to moist air but not to direct
water spray or rain. Most downlights are damp rated.
◉ Wet Location fixtures can be exposed to direct water spray or rain,
including extreme conditions outdoors.
◉ Spa or Shower fixtures are designed for use in shower stalls and over
spas.
◉ Emergency fixtures are equipped with a backup battery so as to produce
light for at least 90 min. during a power outage
Spacing Guidelines
Spacing Guidelines

◉ The spacing of downlights is dependent on the light source being used.

Area Sources ( standard incandescent, compact fluorescent, and some LED luminaire)

◉ should use be spaced using a 1.0 spacing criterion.

◉ For example, to use a compact fluorescent downlights to illuminate a 2’-6’’
high table in a 9’-6’ ceiling, you would need to space the fixtures 7’-0” on
center to provide a fairly uniform light level on the table.
9’-6” ceiling height
- 2’-6” high table

= 7’-0” spacing
Spacing Guidelines

Point Sources ( halogen, metal halide, and some LED fixtures)

◉ should use be spaced using a 0.5” spacing criterion.

◉ For example, to light the same table using halogen downlights in a 12’-6”
ceiling, you would need to space them 5’-0” on center.

12’-6” ceiling height

- 2’-6” high table

= 10’-0” (0.5”)
= 5’-0” spacing
Spacing Guidelines

◉ Generally, area sources should be used in 8’-10’ high ceilings and point sources
should be limited to ceilings above 10’.
◉ Area sources have wider patterns and can be spaced farther apart; however,
they do not project light very far, so they do not work as well in high ceilings.
