Papkovich Neuber potentials
 For a 3D problem we have 3 coupled
Elliptic PDE
 Papkovich Neuber assumes a
displacement potential and gets the
stresses
 The potentials have scalar component Ø
and a vector component ¥
 They must satisfy the Boundary
conditions of the body
Displacement formulation:

Navier's Equation in vectorial form ::

Solution to Navier’s equation
 To solve it, we assume the function f(x)
 we can always find scalar f(x) satisfying
this equation

 This is elliptical PDE with particular

solution to f
Solution to Navier’s equation
 Since there is a general solution to the
Poisson equation, namely

 Now, let the displacement potential

functions be the linear combination of the
f and u, then
Solution to Navier’s equation
 Eliminating and solving for those 2
functions in navier’s equation we get
Stress Strain formulation of the Papkovich –Neuber
Function of Potentials--

Infinite Body with a point load
 Assume the potential function
 ¥=P/4ℿ𝑅 where R is 𝑥12 + 𝑥22 + 𝑥3^2
 Ø=0
 Check boundary conditions

 Ui=2( )(¥𝑖 + )

Assumptions:
 Media is Infinite,Isotropic
 ν=0.3
 E=200GPa
 Force(Point Load) P=500KN
 The origin is taken as the point of
application of load
 Results follow-

drastically
Displacements:

Displacement Gradient is very low High Displacement Gradient

Stresses: Normal Stresses
Shear Stress due to point Load
Half Plane with Point Load

 Assume the potential function

(1−ν)δ𝑖3
 ¥=( ) where R is
ℿ𝑅
𝑥1 + 𝑥22 + 𝑥3^2
2
(1−ν)(1−2ν)
 Ø= log(R+x3)

 Follow Same procedure as before
Displacements
Stresses:: Normal Stresses
Stresses: Shear Stress
Conclusion:
 We can see clearly the change in dimension
of the shear stresses and displacements for
the different load cases

 This method of Displacement Potential can

be applied to solve 3D Problems easily for
more complicated Cases too

 Though the Papkovich neuber potential

method was first developed for Linear
Elastic problems, it finds its implementations
in problems of Fluids too.
