TECHNOLOGY

INTEGRATION WORKS!

By
Carrie Christenson
What is technology
integration?
Technology integration is the use of technology
resources -- computers, digital cameras, CD-ROMs,
software applications, the Internet, etc. -- in daily
classroom practices, and in the management of a
school. Technology integration is achieved when the
use of technology is routine and transparent.
(Schaffner, 2010)
Necessary equipment
for technology
integration
1. Computers

2. Software

3. Internet

4. Effective instructional setting

5. Curriculum

6. Students

7. Teachers with a love of

technology

8. Supportive administration
What are the benefits to
teachers and students?
1. Students become engaged in the curriculum
2. Students are challenged intellectually
3. Students develop their analysis and problem solving skills
4. Students learn how to collaborate with others
5. Students can connect with experts in what they are studying
6. Ability to differentiate instruction and assessment
7. Ability to teach students real world skills

1. The 21st century skills student outcomes are the arches at the top. The
student outcomes are the ones that students must master to be successful in
the future.
2. The 21st century skills support systems are the pools at the bottom. The skills
support systems are the components that need to be in the instructional
learning environment to teach students the 21st century skills.

The student of today will graduate into a world

with technology that may not even exist today.
Technology changes so rapidly. A good example
would be the Internet, which was not available ten
years ago for everyone. Today students readily use
desktop computers, laptops, cell phones, netbooks,
e-mail, and the Internet to talk to others and
explore with. The careers of tomorrow will use
technology and we as educators have to prepare
our students to use this tool in a safe and effective
way.
Technology integration benefits the
school
1. Improves school climate
2. Decreases disruptive behavior
3. Improves standardized test scores
4. Staff members participate in professional development
5. Excellent opportunity to invite community in for project
presentations
Technology integration helps
students become proficient in
the NETS.S
The National Educational Technology
Standards for Students are a set of 24
standards arranged into 6 categories.
Students are expected to be proficient in these
standards by the eighth grade. The best way
for students to become proficient in these
standards is for students to have daily practice
with technology in the classroom. This is done
with technology integration.
NETS.S categories
1. Creativity and Innovation
2.Communication and Collaboration
3.Research and Information Fluency
4.Critical Thinking, Problem Solving,
and Decision Making
5.Digital Citizenship
6.Technology Operations and
Concepts
Technology integration helps
teachers become proficient
in the NETS.T
The National Educational Technology Standards
for Teachers are a set of 20 standards which fall
under 5 categories. When teachers become
proficient in these categories, they are better able
to integrate technology into their teaching.
Teachers proficient in the NETS.T benefit a school
because they share their knowledge of
technology and the curriculum with other staff
members, as well as all students.
NETS.T categories
1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning
and Creativity
2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning
Experiences and Assessments
3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
4.Promote and Model Digital Citizenship
and Responsibility
5.Engage in Professional Growth and
Leadership
