Algebraic Expression: Edison D. Jacinto

This document discusses algebraic expressions and their components. It defines an algebraic expression as containing variables, constants, or a combination of both related by mathematical operations. Variables can take different values, while constants have fixed values. Examples are provided to demonstrate algebraic expressions containing variables like x and y, and constants like 4, 3, 2. Readers are asked to identify the constants and variables in sample expressions. The document emphasizes that variables can represent elements from sets of real numbers in expressions.

Algebraic Expression

Edison D. Jacinto
Are you familiar with the arithmetic
statement 2+3=5?

X,Y
5 x y 5
In the last expression, x and y ay take values
from the set of integers that make the statement
true. For example:

5 + 0 = 5 1 + 4 = 5 -3 + 8=5
4 + 1 = 5 0 + 5 = 5 -4 + 9= 5
3 + 2 = 5 -1 + 6 = 5 -5 + 10=5
2 + 3 = 5 -2 + 7 = 5 -6 + 11=5
x y 5
There is an infinite number of values that can
take the places of x and y. These letters are
called variables and the number 5, which
remains unchanged is called constant.
 Consider the expression
4𝑥 2 + 3𝑦 + 2 .

The numbers 4, 3, 2 are constants.

The letters x and y are the variables.
 These variables may represent elements of
the set of real numbers.
 Remember

Variables are symbols or letters that may take one or

more than one value.

Constants are numbers that have fixed values.

Algebraic Expression is a variable, a constant, or

a combination of both which may be related by any of
the four fundamental operations.
