Types of Functions
Functions Used in Economics
Function
A function is a rule that assigns to each object
in a set A exactly one object in a set B.
Example: Suppose x is the number of items
sold and y is the total amount gain
from selling those items.
x y

0 P0
1 P50
2 P100 Note that it produces a
correspondence between two sets of
3 P150 element such that to each element in
the first set (domain) there
5 P250 corresponds one and only one
element in the second set (range).

Ways to Represent a Function

Algebraically: by means of a formula

Suppose that the function f is specified by

f(x) = 3x2 – 4x + 1
Then,
f(2) = 3(2)2 – 4(2) + 1 = 5
or
f(1) = 3(1)2 – 4(1) + 1 = 0

Ways to Represent a Function
graphically: by means of a graph
The graph of the function f is the set of all points (x, f(x))
in the xy-plane, where we restrict the values of x to lie in the
domain of f.

To sketch the graph of the function
