Chapter 5 (Simulation of Distillation Columns)

The document discusses simulating an atmospheric crude oil distillation column in HYSYS. It describes the key components of the process including preflashing the crude oil, heating it, and distilling it in the column to produce naphtha, kerosene, light diesel, heavy diesel, and atmospheric gas oil cuts. The simulation involves characterizing the crude oil components, creating a blend, installing it in the flowsheet, running the simulation, and analyzing the results. The residue from the atmospheric column is then used as feed for a vacuum distillation column simulation in Aspen Plus to further separate the feed.

Simulation of Crude Oil

Atmospheric Distillation
Column Using Hysys
Defining the Trend
In this Presentation, we will be walked through a Steam Distillation Column (The
atmospheric crude column) processes in HYSYS version 2006.

Atmospheric Crude Columns are one of the most important pieces of equipment in
the petroleum refining industry. Typically located after the Desalter and the Crude
Furnace, the Atmospheric Tower serves to distil the crude oil into several different
cuts. These include naphtha, kerosene, light diesel, heavy diesel and AGO.

In this module, we will construct, run, analyze and manipulate an Atmospheric

Crude Column simulation.

Process Description
The petroleum characterization method in HYSYS will
convert laboratory analyses of condensates, crude oils,
petroleum cuts and coal-tar liquids into a series of discrete
hypothetical components.

These petroleum pseudo components provide the basis for the

property package to predict the remaining thermodynamic
and transport properties necessary for fluid modeling.
Process Description
HYSYS will produce a complete set of physical and critical
properties for the petroleum pseudo components with a
minimal amount of information.
There are three steps involved in characterizing any oil in
HYSYS:
1. Characterize the Assay
2. Creating The Blend
3. Install the Oil in the Flowsheet
