Value Engineering Of: Steel Structures in RMHS Project

The document summarizes value engineering improvements made to the steel structure design for a large coal and coke handling project. Key design modifications included adjusting conveyor gallery spans to reduce steel quantity, changing gallery support from trestles to portals where possible, distributing service loads across galleries evenly, and using 3D structural analysis of galleries. Tall trestle designs were optimized to balance deflection and strength. The use of simple modeling tools helped evaluate more design options and achieve an estimated steel savings of 1000 MT or approximately 6 crores. Close collaboration between engineering teams allowed a better overall engineering solution to be developed.

Project Details
• Project : Coal and coke handling
• Project cost : 312 Crores
• Total Concrete Quantity involved : 39, 209 Cum
• Total Structural Steel Involved : 11, 988 MT
• Saved Structural Quantity : 1000 MT (approx. 6.0 Crores )
• Overall Conveyer length: Appx. 7.5 km. (steel)
• No of Process buildings: 5 nos (Steel/Concrete bldgs.)
• No of junction towers: 23 nos (Steel )
Design Improvements :
Conveyor gallery structures
• Layout modifications
- Adjustment of gallery spans without disturbing the conveyor profile
wherever spans were large.
- Changing the gallery/trestle type arrangement to portal type construction
for conveyors running low level.
• Geometry modifications - Distributing the service loads (cable tray, water
pipes) across the gallery evenly in a balancing way.
• Structural Analysis - A complete 3D gallery truss model was used for
making gallery structural analysis in slope instead of 2D approach.
Design Improvements :
Gallery Supporting Trestles, Junction Towers
• Gallery Supporting Trestles
Care taken for tall trestles such that the deflection and strength ratios
are balanced so that the design solution is optimum. To achieve this the
base width of tall Trestles were increased with due consideration to site
constraints.
• Junction towers and Process Buildings
• Hot rolled parallel flange sections were used wherever possible for
columns and beams.
Design Improvements :
Time Saving Simple Tools
• Simple and easy to use Gallery and trestle modelling tools were developed.
• Helped in saving time in model generation and load application in 3D
environment.
• More trials to obtain optimum solution, indirectly helped in economy.
solutions.
Conclusion
• As the Tender quantities considered were Stringent, we had to
meticulously study the engineering solution from different points of view.
• Close interaction with site team/mech. / Electr. Engineering team, we could
achieve better solution.
