Computer Aided Design & Analysis

The document discusses the engineering design process, which is a methodical series of steps that engineers use to create functional products and processes. It is highly iterative, with parts often needing to be repeated before moving to the next step. The design process applies basic sciences, math, and engineering to optimally convert resources to meet a stated objective. It also covers how computer-aided design and manufacturing has revised the traditional product and design cycles to increase productivity, improve quality, and enable better communication and manufacturing databases.

Lecture 2
Engineering Design

• The engineering design process is a methodical series of steps that engineers use in
creating functional products and processes.

• The process is highly iterative - parts of the process often need to be repeated many
times before another can be entered - though the part(s) that get iterated and the
number of such cycles in any given project may vary.

• It is a decision making process in which the basic sciences, mathematics, and

engineering sciences are applied to convert resources optimally to meet a stated
objective.

Reasons for implementing CAD

• To increase the productivity of the designer

• To improve the quality of design
• To improve communications
