Dear Students

• The impact of environment and consumer demand

has made a practicing engineers life real challenging.

• Every new design is unique and challenging.

• Every design engineer is aware that the knowledge

and techniques available are quite limited when
compared to the complexity of problems encountered.
• Designer must be aware of the tools that

can help, then design better products and

at an optimum investment.
CADD CENTRE
has understood the exact need of a structural

Engineer and devised curriculum that meets

the Designer's expectation.

• It is the professional’s choice for steel, concrete,

timber, aluminum and cold-formed steel design

of virtually any structure including culverts,

petrochemical plants, tunnels, bridges, piles and

much more.
• V8i –
• Bentley calls V8i the most comprehensive

and release in its history.

• i–
• The “ i ” in the new V8i version stands for :

– Intuitive, interactive, intrinsic, incredible, and

interoperable.
Hardware Requirements

– PC with Intel Pentium or equivalent.

– Graphics card 7 monitor with 1024 X 768

resolution,256 color display( 16 bit)

– I GB RAM or higher.

– Windows 2000, XP and Windows 7 or higher OS

SESSION 1
Introduction
• Structural Engineering:
– Structural Engineering is a field of engineering dealing
with the analysis and design of structures that support
or resist loads.

– Structural Engineers are responsible for engineering

and design.
• Entry level engineers ---> Individual structural element.

• Experienced ’’ ---> Integrity of an entire system.

• Structure:
– It can be defined as an assembly of interrelated or
interdependent parts forming a more complex, unified
whole and serving a common purpose.

– The super structure is the vertical extension of a building

above the foundation.

– Columns, Beams and Load bearing walls support floor and

roof structures.

– Any structure develops internal forces in its component

members known as “structural Elements”.

Based upon Orientation
1) Global Coordinate Systems
This coordinate is apply to whole structure or
model Generation.

Length  X Direction
Breadth  Z Direction
Depth  Y Direction

Local Coordinate Systems

This coordinate is apply to every individual

Types of Structures
• Space structure:

• Accept for any configuration of geometry & loading.

• Permits 3 dimensional structures.

• Permits loading in any direction.

• Coordinate system follows right hand rule.

• Plane structure:

• Accept only for 2 dimensional modes in the X Y plane

with no loads or deformations perpendicular to this

plane.

• All loads & deformations are in the plane of the

structure.
• Truss structure:

• Permits loading in any direction, but members only provides

axial resistance.

• Members cannot resist bending and shear loads.

• Permits 3 dimensional structures.

• Permits deformations in all global directions.

• Coordinate system follows right hand rule.

• Floor structure:

• Accept for 2 dimensional models in the X Z plane with

loading and deformations perpendicular to this plane.

• All loads and deformations are parallel to the global Y

axis.
Basic definitions in structural
Analysis and Design
• Stress:
• The force of resistance offered by a member per unit
area is called Stress.
– Stress =Force/Area(P/A)M/mm2

• Strain:
• The ratio of change in length to the original length of
the member is called Strain.
– Strain =dl/l
• Young’s Modulus:
• Within the limits of elasticity, the ratio to the linear
stress to the linear strain is termed the modulus
elasticity or Young’s modulus.
– Young’s modulus = Stress/Strain
» It describes stiffness of material properties.

• Poison Ratio:
• The ratio of transverse contraction strain to longitudinal
expansion strain.
• Density:
• The mass per unit volume of a substance.
– Density= Mass/Volume
• Shear force:

• The sum of vertical forces at a given section of member.

• Bending Moment:

• The algebraic sum of all the moments at a given section

of member.
• Structural Analysis:

• The calculation of the response of structures to actions.

• Design:

• Design of a structure is to access the loads and to

provide members of sufficient proportions to resist

assessed loads with a sufficient margin of safety.

Manual Design Cycle
• Create 2-D Plan (Auto CAD or Equal Software)
• Create 3-D Model ( Revit or 3ds Max, Archicad)
• Model Generated (Staad.Pro or Ansys civil, Pro Steel)
1. Position of Beam & Column(centre line based)
2. Size (Properties)
3. Loads
4. Analysis Print & Run analysis
5. Design
6. Safe. (If is not safe to repeat steps 2-6 )
• Nodes :

• Stiffed joints with 9 reactions. It is located at each end

of beam, corner of plate. It hold the following,

– Node Number

– Node Coordinate in XYZ space.

• Beams :

• Any member in the structure. It can be column, beam,

bracing member or truss member. Beams are actually

defined based on the Nodes at the ends.

– Beam Number

– Node Numbers at its ends.

• Plates :
• A thin shell with multi- nodded shape starting from 3
nodes. It can be any thing of slab, wall or raft
foundation.
– Plate Number
– Node Numbers at each corner of it.
