Beams are designed to resist tensile, compressive and shear stresses. Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension, while steel is very strong in tension. Reinforced concrete beams overcome the tensile weakness of concrete by providing reinforcing steel in the tension zone. Beams can fail under tension only, tension and compression, or in an L-beam or T-beam configuration. Beams also include open and closed stirrups, as well as details like beam dimensions.
