Computing Model: R. V. Longe

1) There are three essential categories of data files for mineral exploration computing models: field data files, bibliographic index files, and mineral deposit data files. 2) Field data files contain quantitative and qualitative observations from the field that can be analyzed statistically. Bibliographic index files list keywords describing documents' data. Mineral deposit data files organize each data item to one described deposit. 3) Effective computing models require adaptable storage and retrieval, adequate data files, minimal staff and organization, and integrated paper and computer filing systems. Users must understand computer techniques' geological applications.

COMPUTING MODEL

R. V. LONGE
 Essential requirements for the use of computers in mineral exploration are:

An adaptable storage-retrieval system

Adequate data file
Minimum establishment in terms of staff and organization
Integration of computer filing systems with paper filing system
Understanding by users of the application of computer techniques
to geological information
 Types of data files fall into three categories: (1) Field Data fries, (2) Bibliographic Index files and
(3) Mineral Deposit Data files.
Data observations can be used to generate
frequency distributions, plots on a stereonet

• A contouring of the
reciprocal of the interval
between mineralized
joint planes.
• Intensity of jointing, can
be useful for selecting
areas for further
examination.
• A high proportion of
observations in the field
(statigraphic) require
qualitative rather than
• Bibliographic Index files are
made by listing for each
document a series of key
words describing the type of
data to provide the user with a
list of documents.
• Bibliographic file should
include the geographic limits,
north, south, east, and west
of the area to which the
document applies.
The data are organized so that each item of
data relates to only one of the mineral
deposits described in the file.

Difficulties and Limitation

• A minimum organization or
establishment must be provided in the
form of a computer
• Much exploration does not require
painstaking research into previous
information and the consequent need
for Bibliographic Index files and
Mineral Deposit data files.
• Best method of storing maps
themselves is in some type of
mechanical rather than electronic
filing system.
