Sixth Sense Tutoring System

The document proposes a Sixth Sense Tutoring System (SSTS) that uses fuzzy logic and adapts to individual students. It discusses the challenges of current tutoring systems and proposes a design using hardware like cameras and sensors to detect affective states, and software for a thin client, web-based tutoring interface. The goal is to aid but not replace human teachers by developing a cost-effective intelligent tutoring system.

Teaching Learning Cycle
 Access what your students know
 Diagnose where each student needs help
 Prescribe the most effective
instruction/mode
 Teach the right material at right time
 Report the results
ITS
 Definition
– A learning technology that dynamically adapts learning content
to objectives, needs, and preferences of a learner by making use
of his expertise in instructional methods and the subject to be
taught.
– Focuses on computer tutors that adapts to individual students

 Needs
– Lack of Expert
– Classroom teaching
– Knowledge level gaps
– Different interest

Challenges
 If students merely keep guessing until they find an action that gets
positive feedback, they can learn to do the right thing for the wrong
reasons – shallow learning

 The tutor does not ask students to explain their actions – multiple
choice questions

 The user interface of tutoring systems requires students to display

many of the details of their reasoning – no stepping back to see the
“basic approach”

 When students learn quantitative skills (e.g., algebra or physics

problem solving), they are usually not encouraged to see their work
from a qualitative, semantic perspective
