Introduction to HP, Compaq, DEC &
Tandem Computers Companies

Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) was founded by Ken Olsen in 1957. In those
days the word computer conjured up visions of mammoth machines in huge rooms
with one glass wall for visitor viewing.
In 1992 Olsen retired. In 1998 DEC was sold to Compaq in the largest-ever
acquisition in the industry. Finally, in 2002, Compaq was sold to Hewlett-Packard.
Compaq was founded by three Texas Instruments (TI) dropouts Rod Canion, Jim
Harris, and Bill Murto in 1982. By 1987 Compaq had built 1 million computers.
Compaq has never been an engineering company in the sense that DEC was and HP
is today; however, Compaq was innovative in that it was the first company to even
attempt to beat IBM at its own game in the PC market.
Introducing the HP-UX Operating System

HP-UX is the Hewlett-Packard Companys implementation of a UNIX

operating system that is compatible with various industry standards.
HP-UX is based on the UNIX System V Release 4 and was designed by HP for
the RISC architecture of Motorola. It is a pure server operating system with
high availability and flexible memory and security management.
HP-UX is equipped with a variety of tools for use in enterprises for the
monitoring (costs, work load) as well as for the logging and visualization.
HP-UX OS version history
Prior to the release of HP-UX version 11.11, HP used a
decimal version numbering scheme with the first number
giving the major release and the number following the decimal
showing the minor release. With 11.11, HP made a marketing
decision to name their releases 11i followed by a v(decimal-
number) for the version. The i was intended to indicate the OS
is Internet-enabled, but the effective result was a dual version-
numbering scheme.
