OUTPUT DEVICES

An output device lets a computer to

communicate with you. The devices which
are used to display the data to the user
either in the form of hard copy or soft copy
are called output devices. A monitor,
printer and speakers are all output devices.
TYPES OF OUTPUT DEVICES
Soft-copy Output
A soft copy is the unprinted digital document file. This term is often contrasted
with hard copy. It can usually be viewed through an appropriate editing
program, such as word processing programs, database programs, or
presentation software, depending on the file type.
It can be transported from one computer to another through file
transfer/downloading mechanisms such as FTP or HTTP, as an email
attachment, or through USB drives and other disk drives. Keeping a digital
copy of a document can allow easy editing of it later on.
Hard-copy Output
Produced on a paper or some material that can be touched and carried for
being shown to others
Permanent in nature and can be kept in paper files or can be looked at a later
time when the person is not using the computer
Examples are output produced by printers or plotters on paper.
COMMONLY USED OUTPUT
DEVICES
Monitor
Printer
Plotter
Screen image projector
Speaker
Voice response system
MONITORS
Monitors are the most popular output
devices used for producing soft-copy
output.
Display the output on a television like
screen.
Monitor is associated with a keyboard is
called a video display terminal (VDT).
TYPES OF MONITOR
Cathode-ray-tube (CRT), are oldest among all available
models these days. These monitors function on the old
cathode ray tube phenomena. The best thing in CRTs is that
they are easily available and are in cheaper in price. They
consume more power.
Flat-panel monitors Liquid crystal display monitors are not
the latest but the later version than CRT monitors. Unlike
CRT monitors, these monitors are compact and slim. Now
they are also used with non- portable desktop computer
systems because they occupy less table space. These
monitors do consume low and almost have no dependency
on backlight technology. Due to its quality of consuming
low power and compact in shape and size.
TYPES OF MONITOR
PRINTERS
Most common output devices for producing
hard-copy output
Printer prints whatever is on the monitor onto
paper. Printers can print words, numbers, or pictures.
Types are
Dot matrix printer
Thermal printer
Inkjet printer
Laser printer
DOT MATRIX
Head runs back and
forth, up and down.
Strike an ink-
soaked cloth
ribbon.
Produces output on
paper.

THERMAL
Prints by heating
thermal paper.
Coating turns black
where heated
It creates the
image.
INKJET PRINTER
Propel drops of ink
on page.
Most common
type.
Low cost.
High quality output
LASER PRINTER

Uses static
electricity as
temporary glue.
Toner clinges to ve
charged area of drum
Drum rolls over the
paper to give output
PLOTTERS
Plotters are an ideal output device for
architects, engineers, city planners, and
others who need to routinely generate high-
precision, hard-copy graphic output of
widely varying sizes
Two commonly used types of plotters are:
Flatbed plotter
Drum plotter
FLATBED PLOTTER
Paper is fixed on
flat surface.
Pens are moved to
draw the image.
Can use different
colour pen to draw.
DRUM PLOTTER

The pen is moved

on single axis.
Paper itself moves
on drum.
It gives different
axis or dimension.
SCREEN IMAGE PROJECTOR
An output device that can be directly
plugged to a computer system for projecting
information from a computer on to a large
screen
Useful for making presentations to a group
of people with direct use of a computer
Full-fledged multimedia presentation with
audio, video, image, and animation can be
prepared and made using this facility
SCREEN IMAGE PROJECTOR
AUDIO OUTPUT: SOUND
CARD AND SPEAKER
Audio output is the ability of the computer
to output sound.
Two components are needed:
Sound card Plays contents of digitized
recordings
Speakers Attach to sound card
SOUND CARD
Generates an audio signal and send it to a
computers speakers
It convert digital signal to analog signal
It is usually a separate circuit board
It is plugged in to the motherboard
SPEAKER
A speaker is a device that
produces computer output as
sound
Speakers are common
devices in computer systems
Examples include:
Built-in speaker
Two-device set speakers
Surround sound speakers
HEADPHONE

Headphones give sound output from the computer. They are

similar to speakers, except they are worn on the ears so only
one person can hear the output at a time.
VOICE RESPONSE SYSTEM
Voice response system enables a computer
to talk to a user
Has an audio-response device that produces
audio output
Such systems are of two types:
Voice reproduction systems
Speech synthesizers
VOICE REPRODUCTION SYSTEM
Produce audio output by selecting an
appropriate audio output from a set of
pre-recorded audio responses
Applications include audio help for
guiding how to operate a system,
automatic answering machines, video
games, etc.
VOICE SYNTHESIZER
Converts text information into spoken
sentences
Used for applications such as:
Reading out text information to blind persons
Allowing those persons who cannot speak to
communicate effectively
Translating an entered text into spoken words in
a selected language
