It is the most varied in scope,
treatment and purpose.

It is often considered the jewel of

journalism for it does usually give hard
facts and screaming figures; but filled
with elements of interest, thereby
generating mixed emotions, feelings
and reactions from readers.
It is a news story
written like
a piece
of fiction.
It is a
COMBINATION of

JOURNALISM
and

LITERATURE
MAIN OBJECTIVE
is to entertain; but it may
also instruct, advise or
inform.
Above all, it must
relate to mans inner
feelings.

WHAT TO Dos
HOW TO DOs
1. Feature writing is a new discipline. Be
careful in choosing the topic or
subject that you will write.
2. Be sure that your article is credible.
Although a feature is not written with
the five Ws and one H, it should,
however, be based on facts and reality.
3. Enliven your feature with relevant
anecdotes or episodes.
4. In a personal experience write-up, use the
first person I. You may also use the
second person YOU when writing for
emphasis, especially if you want the reader
to relate to the story.

5. Use quotations in the early part of the

articles. Quotations or dialogues lend
credibility and set the mood or
atmosphere of the story.
6. Make your ideas concrete by using
imagery or figures of speech that the
readers will understand.
7. Avoid highbrow language; otherwise you
will not be communicating effectively.
8. Keep your paragraphs short and snappy.
9. In writing informative features, be sure to
include some human interest angles.
10. The most important parts of a
feature story are the opening
and closing paragraphs.
If possible, put a linkage between
the two.
Dramatize, if necessary.
IMPORTANT REMINDER:

A news feature
differs from the
straight news story.
Difference between the
NEWS STORY and
the NEWS FEATURE

NEWS STORY:
DAGUPAN CITY An 11-year old pupil of the Bolosan
Elementary School died yesterday morning after he was hit by
a speeding truck in front of the school.
The child was identified as Renato Remogat, eldest son
of a city policeman and a resident of nearby barangay Mangin.
Remogat was crossing the street in front of the BES when
the cargo truck driven by Jerwin Manalastas, 38, married and a
resident of Mangaldan, suddenly lost its brakes and could not
be stopped.
DAGUPAN CITY -- When he was only nine years old, Renato
Remogat, an active kid from barangay Mangin and the son of a
city policeman, had a dream which made him different from
other kids of his age.
The dream: He wanted to become the mayor of Dagupan City!
Because of this desire, his friends teased him and he became
the butt of jokes as they laughed at him either openly or secretly.
He never minded them, though. As he looked at newspapers
showing photos and pronouncements of the incumbent city
mayor , the dream became more intense in his thoughts.
In fact, this made him truly different from his classmates and
close friends because, noticeably, he strived to study hard so as
to qualify as city mayor in the future.
But this dream will never reach reality anymore.
In the afternoon of October 21, the 11-year old boy was hit by
a wayward truck right in front of his school. Renato died instantly
on the pavement.
And his dream died with him
FEATURE LEADS
MARY ANN Legaspi and Mary Ann Mostoles were both
excited to go back to school after their semestral break on
Monday.
The bubbly 13-year olds had excitedly prepared their
notebooks and books two days before classes would resume. They had
also ironed their uniforms and readied their class projects for
submission.
They never went to school again.
Their classmates saw only their remains in white wooden
coffins at Escoto Funeral Homes in Carmen in Rosales town, about 50
kilometers southeast of Dagupan City.
The two Mary Anns were among six girls aged 13 to 17 years
who drowned during a victory party of Sangguniang Kabataan
candidates on Nov. 4 in the neighboring town of Bayambang.
Legaspi had won as SK councilor.

Oasis a desert spot providing safety or
sanctuary, a haven. Ancient kings and queens used to
battle for such verdant locations. A spot of vegetation in
the middle of a barren desert can protect travelers from
harsh weather and replenish dwindling supply of food
and water. Its remarkable how oases enhanced
commerce and culture in nearby ancient settlements.

What if you could really try everything you can

think of trying? What if you could be a model and an
actress and a career woman? What if you could do
educational TV and reality TV? What if imagine that
you could host a travel show, something that most
people list as what theyd do if they could do anything
they wanted?
