Energy Storage: J001-Sana Bajpai J002 - Deepak Chauhan J020 - Sajal Mittal J022 - Lekha Prabhakar J042-Anukriti Yadav

The document discusses energy storage as an essential concept to overcome issues with the current energy grid such as mismatch of demand and supply and variability in renewable energy sources. Energy storage involves converting energy produced at one time for use later by capturing and storing it in more convenient forms. It is currently dominated by hydroelectric dams and batteries. Energy storage is needed to distribute electricity during peak demand from reserves, handle unpredictable demand fluctuations, help decarbonization efforts, and integrate variable renewable energy sources by storing excess energy when available.

Energy
Energy can neither be created or destroyed.

Most common energy sources are fossil fuels. However, Rising fuel
prices, depletion of these reserves and increasing concern for global
climate change have lead to the objective of reducing our
dependence on fossil fuels, using alternate sources and improving
efficiency of existing plants.
Alternatives
Renewable energy resources

Nuclear Plants.

Batteries
Current issues with the grid
Mismatch of demand and supply
Variability in availability in renewable energy sources
Places located far from the grid.

To overcome these issues, Energy Storage becomes an essential

concept.
Energy Storage
Capture of energy produced at one time for use at a later time
Energy storage involves converting energy from forms that are difficult to
store to more conveniently or economically storable forms.
Bulk energy storage is currently dominated by hydroelectric dams.
Batteries are the most common type of energy storage device.
Need for energy storage:
Electricity can be distributed during peak demand easily from the reserves.
Any unpredictable high frequency in demand can be catered to through back up
energy stored.
A Step towards decarbonisation
Variability of RES can be handled by storage of energy when they are in abundance.
Also promotes full integration of RES.
