The document discusses the problem solving method, which employs the scientific method of collecting information through observation and asking questions. The scientific method involves formulating a hypothesis, testing the hypothesis through experiments, analyzing and interpreting the results, and communicating the findings. Using this problem solving approach has several advantages, such as developing higher-level thinking skills, responsibility, and an appreciation for scientific achievements. Teachers should provide guidance to students throughout the problem solving process and focus on developing skills and positive attitudes rather than just results or knowledge.

PROBLEM SOLVING
METHOD INSTRUCTOR: Estrella, Erwin O. REPORTER: Garcia, Daniel Bezalel A. SUBJECT: Principles of Teaching WHAT IS PROBLEM SOLVING METHOD?
PROBLEM SOLVING, as defined, is a
strategy that employs the scientific method in collecting information. Scientific method always starts with observation. Observation is the process of recording information using the five senses. After the observation, the scientific method follows. STEPS OF SCIENTIFIC METHOD 1.) ASK A QUESTION 2.) DO A BACKGROUND RESEARCH 3.) FORMULATE HYPOTHESIS 4.) TESTING OF HYPOTHESIS 5.) ANALYZING, INTERPRETING, & DRAWING CONCLUSIONS 6.) COMMUNICATE YOUR RESULTS ADVANTAGES This method is most effective in developing skills in employing the science process. The scientific method can likewise be used effectively in other non-science subjects. The students active involvement resulting in meaningful experiences serves as a strong motivation to follow the scientific procedure in future undertakings. Problem-solving develops higher level thinking skills. A keen sense of responsibility, originality, and resourcefulness are developed. The students become appreciative and grateful for the achievements of scientists. The students learn to accept the opinions and evidence shared by others. GUIDELINES Provide sufficient training in defining and stating the problem in a clear and concise manner. Make sure that the problem to be solved fits the age, interests, and skills of the students. Group the students and allow each one to share in the tasks to be performed. Guide them at every step by asking leading questions in case of snags. Get ready with substitutions for materials which may not be available. Emphasize the procedure and the process employed rather on the products or results. Prioritize the development of skills and attitudes over knowledge. Involve the students in determining the criteria with which they will be evaluated.
