Induction System Report

The document discusses induction systems for reciprocating engines. It describes the major components of a normally aspirated induction system including the air intake, induction air filter, fuel delivery system, and intake manifold. It explains how these components work together to introduce air and fuel into the engine. The document also covers supercharged induction systems that are either internally or externally driven, as well as various types of induction icing that can occur.

AIR INTAKE
Air scoop
Designed to direct outside
air into a carburetor or other
fuel metering device.

To prevent dust, sand, abrasive materials, and
other contaminants from entering the

NORMALLY ASPIRATED ENGINE

INTAKE MANIFOLD
The purpose of intake manifold is :

-it increases the temperature

of the fuel-air mixture slightly
for a better vaporization of
the fuel
NORMALLY ASPIRATED ENGINE
INTAKE MANIFOLD ON RADIAL ENGINES
SMALL Radial Engines
On a small radial engine of low output
, the air is drawn through the
carburetor , mixed with fuel in the
carburetor, and then carried to the
cylinders through individual intake
pipes .

HIGH OUTPUT Radial Engine

In a typical high-output engine, an internal blower or a supercharge
is located in the rear section of the engine . The fuel-air mixture
passes from the carburetor through the supercharge or blower and
the then flows out through the diffuser section and individual intake
pipes to the engine cylinders

INDUCTION SYSTEM ICING

3 TYPES
1.Fuel Evaporation
2.Throttle Ice
3.Impact Ice
NORMALLY ASPIRATED ENGINE
CARBURETOR ICING

Occurs due to the effect of fuel vaporization and the decrease in the air
pressure in the venturi, which causes a sharp temperature drop in the
carburetor.
Occur when the temperature drop conditions are moist (approx. more than
50% relative humidity) and ambient temperature from -7 to 32 degrees
celcius.
NORMALLY ASPIRATED ENGINE
THROTTLE ICE

Formed in the rearside of the throttle, or butterfly valve when its partially
closed.
REASON
As air flows around the butterfly valve, a low pressure area is created. This has a cooling
effect on the fuel/air mixture which causes moisture to accumulate. Thus, freezing the
butterfly valve.

IMPACT ICE

This is formed by the impact of moist air at temperatures between -10C

and 0C on air scoops, throttle plates, heat valves, etc.
Most rapid accumulation can be anticipated at -4C. This type of icing can
affect fuel injection systems as well as carburetor systems and is also the
main type of icing hazard for turbocharged engines.
