History of Morse Code

Morse code is a method of communication that represents letters with combinations of short and long signals. It was invented in 1836 by Samuel Morse, Joseph Henry, and Alfred Vail. Morse code was used for critical communication during World War II and as the international standard for maritime communication until 1999. It works by translating clicks from a telegraph into dots and dashes that can be written down or transmitted as short and long tone pulses by radio. While still used today, Morse code is expected to decline in use over time as technology advances enabled newer communication methods.

HISTORY OF MORSE CODE

BY: CASSIE
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DEVICE/ SYSTEM

Morse Code is a method or code of transmitting information which letters are

represented by a series of short and long signals, light, sound, clicks etc.
Samuel Morse, Joseph Henry, and Alfred Vail invented the Morse Code. It was
invented in 1836.
TIMELINE THAT DESCRIBES THE DEVELOPMENT OF
THE TECHNOLOGY
WHAT DOES IT DO? NAME THE USES OF THE
MORSE CODE SYSTEM
Morse Code is a method of transmitting text information as a series of on-off tones,
lights, or clicks that can be directly understood by a skilled listener or observer without
special equipment. It is named for Samuel F. B. Morse, an inventor of the telegraph

Morse code was critical for communication during World War II. It was also used as an
international standard for communication at sea until 1999, when it was replaced by
the Global Maritime Distress Safety System. The new system takes advantage of
advances in technology, such as satellite communication.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The telegraph operators soon learned that they could translate the clicks
directly into dots and dashes, and write these down by hand, thus making the
paper tape unnecessary. When Morse Code was adapted to radio
communication, the dots and dashes were sent as short and long tone pulses.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IT WILL LOOK LIKE IN THE
FUTURE?
I think the Morse Code will be used less in the future because it was mostly
invented for military purposes and sailors which used the Flashing Light to Text
Converter (FLTC) system as a way to communicate from ship to ship. People still
may continue to use it but I dont think it will be as common as it was in the past.
