Welcome, Parents!

Grade 3
Mr. Van Will
While you wait, please prepare for a number
talk! Without using a calculator or paper,
strictly just mental math

What is 19 X 12 ? Remember your answer!

Categories of Student Achievement
Knowledge and Understanding - showing an understanding of the basic facts
(ex: answering a multiplication sentence or stating a pattern).

Thinking - using your knowledge to solve problems and outline the steps to get
to an appropriate answer (ex: solving word problem that involve using
different strategies).

Communication - explaining your thinking, showing why things are, or how

you know something is true (ex: explaining the difference between a seven in
the ones column and a seven in the tens column).

Application - taking the acquired knowledge and applying it in various, and

sometimes new ways, making connections between concepts (ex: knowing how
to arrange numbers on a blank number line).

Reading
Guided reading and Literacy Centres will start soon. Reading groups are by
reading level and areas of need.
Literacy Centres will contain writing, word study, shared and independent
reading activities.
Book Club will also be a part of Guided Reading. Students will complete
inquiry related investigations and discussions surrounding their book.
Again, Reading is much more than simply reading a text without making any
mistakes. It is reading for understanding. We will practise reading
comprehension strategies through our guided reading sessions, but at home
you can help too!
Pausing to ask questions through the story and asking them questions
afterwards to retell the story, their favourite part or to make a connection is
important in aiding reading development.

Mathematics
5 math strands
Number Sense and Numeration, Geometry, Measurement, Patterning, Data
Management and Probability
Minimal work completed by use of textbook and practice
Focus on problem solving
Use of games to enhance practice
Encourage dialogue and discussion, sharing of ideas, methods, interpretations
Mathematics
Math is much more than simply adding and subtracting and stating simple
answers.

We are looking at how the student gets to that answer, the thinking
process they go through and how they communicate that information.

Practising answering questions and going through HOW they arrived at

their answer at home is great to help develop students use of
mathematical language.
Number Talks!
19 X 12
What is the point in my child explaining their
work?
In our technological world, we have machines to perform calculations

Scientists prove or disprove theories by producing more cases that do or do not

work but mathematicians prove theories through mathematical reasoning.

Mathematics is a social subject, proof comes when mathematicians can convince

others of logical connections.

13-6 : Research showed that the difference between high and low achieving
students was not that low achievers knew less math, but that they interacted
with mathematics differently. Instead of approaching numbers with flexibility
and number sense, they clung to formal procedures they had learned.

In your childs future, they wont need to know formal procedures, instead they
will need to be innovative thinkers.
Videos to reinforce these ideas!

Four mindset boosting messages to students

Five principles of extra-ordinary math teaching

Social Studies
Term 1 Communities in Canada : 1780-1850

Term 2 Living and Working in Ontario Present day

Religion
Growing In Faith, Growing In Christ
Unit 1 Our Catholic Community
Explore what it means to be part of a Catholic Community
Unit 2 The Road to Bethlehem
Explore the meaning of Advent and Christmas
Unit 3 Born of the Spirit
Learn that we are strengthened through the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit
Unit 4 Our Lenten Journey
Review and build on Lenten topics such as sins, repentance, and forgiveness
Unit 5 The Promise of the Holy Spirit
Learn about the fulfillment of Jesus promise to send an Advocate
Fully Alive
Theme One Created and Loved By God
Focus on the human person, who is created out of love in the image and likeness of God and
is destined for eternal life.

Theme Two Living in Relationship

The relational nature of the human person is presented. It is within a family that each
person learns the first lessons about love, generosity, trust, commitment, and loyalty.

Theme Three Created Sexual Male and Female

Sexuality is a fundamental component of personality, it is part of our whole identity as
children of God

Theme Four Growing in Commitment

Gods call to faithfulness is explored. To be human is to act freely to make decisions,
choices, and promises.

Theme Five Living in the World

A look at the human society in which each person is born, lives, and works
Success Criteria
Before any projects or tasks we will be completing in class, we will be
creating a list of Success Criteria.

This is a list that we will discuss as a class beforehand, and co-create, to

ensure students have a full understanding of expectations and specific
learning goals.

It is a great checklist for them to utilize in completing their work.

Descriptive Feedback
This is very important to ensure students understand what they did right
and what they can do better next time and focus on.

Things they are doing well

Great job on detail! Great job on spelling and use of punctuation

Things to improve on
Make sure you check your punctuation and capitals.
Include more detail

This gives students a goal for them to focus on next time.

Descriptive Feedback can be found in every subject

Homework
Students are encouraged to read each night. Reading should be a positive
experience and students are encouraged to discover genres or styles of writing
that they enjoy.

Math homework will largely be class website based through the use of our class
website, www.vanwill.weebly.com

Students will respond to a question on the blog page when instructed in agenda

Occasionally a piece of math practice may come home. If you wish to sign out a
textbook to practice at home I am open to such practice

Otherwise, expect the rare at home project that may require some assistance to
complete in preparation for activities that will be occurring in the classroom

EQAO
Takes place in late May early June
It is not something that is discussed until March/April
By teaching to the curriculum in both math/language I believe students
will be properly prepared
However, Bellwork a book they complete each day of the week (except
Friday) contains direct EQAO questions from past years tests.
This gives them exposure to the format of EQAO testing and allows daily
review of concepts taught in grade 3.
It is a great tool for me to use as review and to learn what concepts need to
be reviewed.
