1
NOTE!
The present perfect tense is really a very interesting
tense, and a very useful one. Try not to translate the
present perfect tense into your language. Just try to
accept the concepts of this tense and learn to
"think" present perfect! You will soon learn
to like the present perfect tense!

2
When to use?

To discuss events that have just been completed at

the moment of speaking.

For example:
Q) Have you done your homework?"
A) "Yes, I've just finished it.

3
When to use?
To suggest that a past action still has an effect upon
something happening in the present.
For example:
I’ve studied in this school since last June.
She’s lived in West Palm Beach for two months.

Note: when we use the present perfect with *FOR and SINCE* it
gives the idea that something began in the past and continues
into the present ( may continue into the future )

4
* Since can also introduce a time clause *

OK...So what’s a time clause?

Take a look at the following examples:
 I’ve lived in Lake Worth since I moved to Florida.
When the action in the time clause ended in the past, use the simple
past tense in the time clause.
(“moved to Florida” is over…it happened…it is finished.)
 I’ve studied at the AEC since I’ve lived in Florida.
When the action in the time clause began in the past but continues
into the present, use the present perfect.
(I still live in Florida.)

5
When to use?
Already means that something happened earlier than we expected.
With Present Perfect already usually goes after have or has and before
the main verb.
Examples
We've already had our breakfast.
When are you going to do your homework?
   But I've already done it!
Do you want a cup of coffee?
No, thanks. I've already had one."

Yet means that something that we expected has happened or hasn't

happened. We usually put it at the end of a sentence.
Examples
Has the post arrived yet?
Have you done your homework?
    Not yet.
Haven't you got ready yet? Look at the time!

6
When to use it?

To discuss something from the past but you don't

want to say exactly when.

For example:
Q) "Are you learning any languages?"
A) "Yes, I've begun to learn English."

7
How do we form the Present Perfect Tense?

The structure of the present perfect tense is:

subject+auxiliary verb+main verb  have past participle.

Subject +auxiliary verb + main verb

  You + have + eaten.
I + have + seen E.T.
She + has + been to Rome.

8
Contractions with the present perfect tense

 When we use the present perfect tense in speaking, we usually

contract the subject and auxiliary verb. We also sometimes do
this when we write.

For example:
I have = I’ve
She has = She’s
We have = We’ve

9
What is so confusing about it ?
It can describe either
present or past
activities !

10
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PRESENT PERFECT AND
SIMPLE PAST TENSE
 We use the Past Simple tense to talk about a definite finished time in the
past. For example: when, yesterday, last week, when I was at school, then,
after etc.
Examples
I finished university three years ago.
    Where did we first meet?
I didn't study French at school.
 We use the Present Perfect tense with time references that refer to the
time up to now. For example: today, this week, this month, ever, never,
already, recently, yet etc.
Examples
    I haven't seen her today.
Have you ever smoked a cigarette?
I have never been abroad before.
