INTRODUCTION

Cracks in structures are common occurrence. Structural

component develops cracks whenever stress in the component
exceeds its strength. Stress in a structural component could be
caused by externally applied forces, such as dead, live, wind
or seismic loads, or foundation settlement or it could be
induced internally due to thermal movements, moisture
changes, chemical action, etc. Crack could be broadly
classified as structural or non-structural.

Modes of Crack
OBJECTIVE
The main objective of the present work is to study the effect of material
properties on the failure of notched concrete beam samples(Type I) under
three point bending test.

In addition, load-displacement and load-crack mouth opening

displacement (CMOD) plots will be obtained experimentally and will be
correlated with numerical results.

Numerical included two-dimensional modeling of the beam under three

point bending test using finite element method with the software ANSYS.

3-sets of (each 5) notched beam specimen of 3 different sizes are taken to

study the fracture behavior and to obtain the following parameters :

INTRODUCTION TO FEM
The past decades have shown a significant progress in the numerical modeling of
concrete failure. This is typically the case where concrete is considered as a quasi-
brittle material in which crack plays a dominant role because concrete does not
have the yield behavior. When a crack length reaches a certain critical length, it
can propagate, even though the average stress is much less than tensile strength of
the tests specimen.

Crack analysis of notched concrete beam to find the quantitative relation between
crack length, materials resistance to crack growth, and the stress at which cracks
starts to propagate.

Why crack analysis in concrete

Formation of cracks require a certain amount of energy, which agrees with the
fracture mechanics concept.
Cont..

Finite element analysis provides an efficient tool that can

simulate and predict the response of cracked material of plane
or reinforced concrete members.

After all a failure of concrete members can be tackled by

crack analysis.
MATERIAL
Plain cement concrete beams are taken for the present study,
so materials used :

Cement : Ordinary Portland Cement

Coarse Aggregate : Maximum size as 20 mm
Fine Aggregate : Sand obtained from local river beds
Ply : BWP Grade (ISI 710)Thickness 19 mm
Water : Ordinary portable water.
Mix Adopted : A concrete mix of 1:1.5:3 by weight(M20)
