ON POWER ELECTORNIC
SWITCHES AND
CONVERTER
TOPOLOGIES
What are Converters???
Power electronic circuits are also called power
converters.
A converter uses a matrix of power
semiconductor switches to convert electrical
power.
A converter system comprises of switches,
reactive components L, C and transformers.
These converters are classified into the
following categories-
1) Phase controlled rectifiers
Convert fixed ac voltage to variable dc output
voltage.
Takes power from one or more
voltage/current sources and delivers to load
Output variable is low ripple voltage or
current.
Use line voltage for commutation
2) Choppers
Converts fixed dc input to variable dc output
They are designed using power transistors,
IGBTs, GTOs, power MOSFETs and SCRs.
Output voltage can be varied by changing the
duty cycle of the device by low signals from
control unit
DC-DC CONVERTORS

WHY DC-DC CONVERTER ?

WHAT IS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CONVERTOR AND
CHOPPER?
TYPES OF CHOPPERS

BUCK CONVERTOR
BOOST CONVERTOR
BUCK BOOST
3) Inverters
Converts fixed dc to an ac voltage of variable
frequency and variable magnitude
They are designed using power transistors,
IGBTs, GTOs, power MOSFETs and SCRs
4) Cycloconverters
They are ac-ac converters
Convert input power at one frequency to
output power at another frequency through
one stage conversion
Designed using thyristors and controlled using
triggering signals from control unit
Output frequency lower than source
frequency
THREE TYPES OF SWITCHES

UNCONTROLLED SWITCH
SEMI CONTROLLED SWITCH
FULLY CONTROLLED SWITCH
UNCONTROLLED SWITCH

DIODE
1. SYMBOL

HERE THE ON AND OFF SWITCH CANNOT BE CONTROLLED.

SEMICONTROLLED SWITCH
SCR
Here the ON or OFF can be controlled, but the other one
cannot.
Like SCR-silicon controlled rectifier. It turns ON when it is
1. Forward Biased
2. Triggered by gate
After the SCR is forward biased, you can turn it ON by
triggering through gate terminal.
So it is Semicontrolled Switch.
IGBT
Combines the characteristics of power
transistors and mosfets viz. high efficiency and
high switching frequency
Three terminal device emitter, collector, gate
Triggering signal from control unit given to
gate
Unidirectional, unipolar, fully-controlled
device
GTO
Unidirectional, bipolar, fully-controlled device
Consists of three terminals anode, cathode
and gate
Incorporates the advantages of conventional
thyristor and high voltage switching
Can be triggered by small positive gate current
and turned off by negative gate current.
Controlled switch
1. PBJT
2. PMOSFET
3. PIGBT
4. PGTO
Here both the ON and OFF can be controlled.
