Transmission System Using Flexible Elements Belt & Rope Drives

This document discusses belt and rope drives used for power transmission between shafts. It describes how power is transmitted through friction between a continuous belt or rope passed over pulleys mounted on shafts. The amount of power transmitted depends on factors like the belt's velocity, tension, mass, and contact arc with pulleys. Belt drives are classified as light, medium, or heavy based on transmission speed. Examples of applications include agricultural machinery, machine tools, pumps, turbines, and more. Centrifugal force increases tension on both sides of the continuously running belt.

Outline
Introduction to belt drive.
Factors-Amount of power
transmission.
Types of belt drives.
INTRO
Power has to transmitted from one shaft to
another shaft we r using belt or rope drive.
Pulleys are mounted on the shaft &
continuous belt or rope is passed over
them.
Power transmitted due to friction bn them
& the pulleys.
Dist. bn shaft Large belt, rope or chain.
smaller gears.
Factors- amnt of power tr.
Velocity of belt.
Tension in belt.
Mass of the belt.
Arc of contact bn belt &smaller
pulley.

Dist. Bn the pulleys are not more than

10 m apart.
Types of belt drives
Light drive smaller powers ( upto 10m/s).
Agri m/c; small power tools.

Medium drive speed over 10 m/s- 22m/s.

In all m/c tools.
Heavy drive above 22m/s.
Compressor & generator.
Centrifugal tension
belt continuously runs over the pulley,
some centrifugal force is caused, the
effect is to increase the tension on both
tight side as well as slack side. The tension
caused by the centrifugal force is called
centrifugal tension.
centrifugal tension = Tc = m v2
Applications Pelton Turbine
Applications Machine Tools
Applications Reciprocating Pump
Applications Centrifugal Pump
