French has been known for its invasions on various lands at
different times. India has always been an important place for
French people. The connection between Indian and French
Culture dates back centuries ago where trade happened
between the two countries. Cultural exchange happened along
with material exchange. There has been a strong relation
between these cultures which exchanged
Although India had got Independence 70 years
back, still the French has been an important part
of culture in many parts of India especially in
Pondicherry and few more Union Territories.

The influence of French can be seen in almost all


parts of these places for the past few centuries.

Trade has been happening between the


countries for a long time, even before Colonial
Period. Along with trade exchanged culture,
customs and lifestyle.
The past 200 years saw a vast expansion of
French influence in the Indian Soil politically ,
economically, in terms of food, architecture and
many more fields.
French architecture and planning has always been
appreciated by the world. India has witnessed new
ways which distinguishes it from Indian Architecture.

Pondicherry is one good example for the architecture


influence.

Examples include the oval shaped city center with right-angled street
intersections, and the boulevard that encircles the main part of town,
architecture of the 18th and 19th century Christian churches and public
buildings, a promenade along the beach, and even a statue of Joan of Arc.
The french had influence on the clothing too. Flat
- topped hats are worn by the police in
Pondicherry which is considered a hallmark.

Also, the casual wears have a great impact on


the clothing part.
French Influence was found long back in 1800s too.
The Industrial Revolution which happened in France
had great impact on Indian society, resulting in the war
of 1857.

Also, the economical status of France during that time


and the war depression during the World Wars left a
strong impact.

India also follows the same political system , where


even a Non - hindu can become a leader. Secularism
is also an important point in the list of influences.
