BPMN by Example: Bizagi Suite

The document discusses Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) which is a graphical notation used to describe business process logic and flow. It provides an overview of the key concepts in BPMN including process identification, discovery, analysis, redesign, implementation, monitoring and controlling. It also covers organizational elements like resources and resource classes that are involved in processes. Specific BPMN elements are defined such as pools, lanes, flows, events, gateways and artifacts. BPMN aims to provide a common language for all parties to clearly communicate processes.

BPMN 2.0 Business Process Modeling Notation

Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) is a

graphical notation that describes the logic of steps
in a business process.

This notation has been especially designed to

coordinate the sequence of processes and
messages that flow between participants in
different activities.
The importance of modelling with BPMN

BPMN is an internationally accepted process modeling

standard.
BPMN is independent of any process modeling methodology.
BPMN creates a standardized bridge which reduces the gap
between business processes and their implementation.
BPMN enables you to model processes in a unified and
standardized way so that everyone in an organization can
understand each other.
Introduction

The Business Process Modeling Notation - BPMN

provides a common language which allows all the
parties involved to communicate processes clearly,
completely and efficiently.
BPD is a diagram based on the Flowchart
technique, designed to present a graphical
sequence of all the activities that take place during
a process.
Organisational Elements in Process Models
Two basic abstractions:

Resource: Human actor or equipment (e.g. printer) that is required to perform an activity

Resource class: Set of resources with shared characteristics, e.g. Clerk, Manager,
Insurance Officer

A resource class may be a:

Role (skill, competence, qualification)

Classification based on what a resource can do or is expected to do.

Group (department, team, office, organizational unit)

Classification based on the organizations structure.
Resource Modelling in BPMN
In BPMN, resource classes are captured using:
Pools independent organizational entities, e.g.
Customer, Supplier, East-Tallinn Hospital, Tartu Clinic
Lanes resource classes in the same organizational
space and sharing common systems
Sales Department, Marketing Department
Clerk, Manager, Engineer
