En3550 Introduction

This document provides an introduction and overview of the EN3550 – Digital Signal Processing course taught at the University of Moratuwa. It outlines the course objectives which include studying discrete time signals and systems, digital filter design techniques, and digital signal processors. The course aims to help students understand and apply fundamental DSP concepts. It will be taught by Dr. Ajith Pasqual and Dr. Ranga Rodrigo, and students will be evaluated based on examinations, individual assignments, group projects, and class participation. The group projects will involve implementing DSP applications on a development board.

First ….
• Lecturers:
– Dr. Ajith Pasqual
– Dr. Ranga Rodrigo
• Course web page will contain all relevant
information about the course and is the place
to look at for any important notices relevant to
this course.
– Don’t run around looking for the lecturers … First
check the page.

UNIVERSITY
OF MORATUWA
Course Objectives
• to study the foundation for DSP  Discrete Time
Signals and Systems
• to study the different implementation techniques for a
given discrete  time system and their relative merits
and demerits
• to study digital filter design techniques, including
adaptive filters.
• to study the effects of digitization on DSP hardware
based solution (E.g. finite  word lengths)
• to study the basics of discrete Fourier transforms and
methods for its  computation.
• to study digital signal processors and how to select
one for a given  situation.

UNIVERSITY
OF MORATUWA
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module, students should be able to
• appreciate the importance of DSP for a wide variety
of applications
• understand the foundation for DSP  discrete time
signals and systems
• understand the importance of different
implementation methods  for  discrete time systems
and their relative merits/demerits
• apply the digital filter design techniques to solve real
world filtering  problems
• understand the usage and computation of DFT
• select a suitable digital signal processor for a given
situation
• use Matlab as a tool to find a numerical solution for
any given problem  in DSP

UNIVERSITY
OF MORATUWA
Evaluation Criterion
• Examination – 60%
• Continuous Assessment – 40%
• Let’s look at Continuous Assessment:
– No traditional assignments!!
– One research paper presentation (20% of CA)
– One group project spanning the full semester –
This carries 60% of CA part.
– Group members will be evaluated individually in
addition to group evaluation.
– 10% of CA – Quizzes
– 10% of CA – Class participation
• Few tutorials related to different sections will
be given.

UNIVERSITY
OF MORATUWA
Continuous Assessment (CA)
• Research paper presentation (20% of CA)
– This is an individual assignment. You are required
to find a suitable research paper and study that in
detail.
– Then write a summary paper that includes the key
points discussed in the paper, its relative
significance to this course and probable
improvements (if any) to techniques suggested in
the paper.
• Your main resources for finding a good paper:
– IEEE Signal Processing Magazine
– ICASSP – International Conference on Acoustics,
Speech and Signal Processing

UNIVERSITY
OF MORATUWA
What is this “Group Project”?
• Up to now (from 02 to 05 batches), we had individual
mini projects.  Some students produce excellent work
while some less than ordinary.
– Let us look at an example.
• This has been quite successful.
• Some deficiencies
– No team efforts. You are unlikely to work alone in the industry!
– Full implementation did not happen sometimes due to time and
hardware constraints.
• This time we want equal contribution from all students
in the group.
–  Group project – 2 students/group
– Clear identification of tasks handled by each student
–  You will be using a DSP Development Board or Advanced
Development Board based on FPGA (Field Programmable
Gate Array)

Let us look at places where DSP is
being applied…

UNIVERSITY
OF MORATUWA
Processing of Electrical Signals
• Software Radio,
• Instrumentation and Control  spectrum
analysis, noise reduction
• Speech/Audio  Speech recognition,
synthesis, text to speech
• Telecommunication  Echo cancellation,
adaptive equalization etc.,
• Consumer Applications  mobile
phones, digital TV and cameras etc.,
• Biomedical  scanners, ECG analysis
UNIVERSITY

Generalizations to 2D (with source
being Electrical)
• Image Processing  robot vision, pattern
recognition etc.,
– Lights from a scene induces currents in CCD
elements
– The magnitude of these currents forms the basis of
pixel value (Gray Scale or RGB value with 3
sensors).
– Inherently discrete data (finite number of CCD
elements organized as a matrix).
– Processing of such signal is  2D (Spatial) signal
processing
• Add the temporal element to it
– You will be then processing Video Signals (as a
sequence of 2D signals)

Is DSP only applicable to
Electrical Signals?

Is a signal always
electrical?

What about other discrete
data?

What can you expect at the end?
• You will be exposed to what “Digital
Signal Processing (DSP)” is all about
in the modern context – Signal
Processing has become an integral part
in many products.
• You will be competent in testing your
DSP algorithms in hardware and have a
better idea of implementational issues.
