Final Stage Project

This document presents information on a heart rate monitor project. It discusses the motivation for creating an electronic heart rate monitor that can detect heart rate anywhere conveniently. It describes the hardware components that will make up the circuit including an IR LED, photodiode, filters, and microprocessor. It also discusses the software that will be used, including Proteus for simulation and Keil for microprocessor coding. The document outlines the methodology, including breaking down the hardware circuit into key parts and describing how simulation will be done.

MOTIVATION

The Health care industry is responding to the increasing popularity and

availability of technological innovations, this electronic device will be able to
detect heart rate at any time, as it is relatively compact and easy to use
people will be able to keep track of their cardio logical functions at any time
anywhere, it will be their own personal doctor. It will find use with heart
patients who need regular diagnosis to be alert for proper and professional
medical attention.

METHODOLOGY
HARDWARE : Electronic Devices and Microprocessors will constitute the
hardware of the Heart rate monitor. Given below is the circuit of Heart Rate
Monitor.

METHODOLOGY
SOFTWARE : Today before actually making a circuit , it may actually be
tested using computers, this is called simulation. The software uses
mathematical modelling of the actual circuit. In the age of Information very
accurate and precise model of circuits may be built which also incorporates
the noise present in actual environment. Most common software for this are:
1. Proteus
2. Easy ADA
3.

.Emulation : Emulator is a computer software which behaves like another

computer or a device, heart rate monitor may be emulated using any such
program.

What is Heart rate and how can we measure
it
Heart rate is measured in beats/minute i.e. The total number of times the
heart contracted in one minute. Given Below is structure of Heart

What is Heart rate and how can we measure
it

When Heart contracts, the oxygenated blood present in the left Atrium is
squirted into Aorta and then into Arteries, thus pulses of blood are flowing
in our circulatory system.

We can now measure blood pulse rate which is equal to Heart rate, we will
use the principle of Reflection for this. When focus IF rays on one of the
Arteries, the intensity of the reflected wave if proportional to the amount of
blood in the artery at that point and at that time, hence the reflected wave is
also an Pulse wave.

HARDWARE

Let us break the Circuit into several parts for comprehension.

IR LED and Photodiode : In this stage of the circuit, the IR LED transmits
the IR signal of constant Intensity, the Photodiode, senses the reflected wave
from the finger. The signal yet received is a noisy one and we only need the
lower frequency spectrum for our analysis.

HARDWARE

Let us break the Circuit into several parts for comprehension.

Filtering and Comparator : As human heart rate is usually between 50-

250 beats per minute, so we design a filter of cut-off frequency of about
250/60 Hz, here we have used a second order LPF, followed by a comparator
which outputs a bitstream of frequency of either 1s or 0s equivalent to heart
rate.

HARDWARE

Let us break the Circuit into several parts for comprehension.

Microprocessor, signal interpretation and LCD display : The bit

stream is then interperated to produce an equivalent heart rate, this is done
by coding microprocessor 8051 as a counter and produce a serial output of
final count and input to 16x2 LCD display.

SIMULATION

This step of the project development requires computer simulation of the electronic
circuit to verify its functional behaviour. We will use Proteus of Simulation and Keil for
Microprocessor coding.
