Simulation by Using Stella Software: Prey-Predator Sample Model

This document discusses a prey-predator simulation model created using STELLA software. It includes graphs showing the populations of mice (prey), owls (predator), and oil palm trees over time. The advantages of STELLA simulations are that they provide a risk-free way to study system behavior over time through repeated experiments and help students visualize complex systems. Some disadvantages are that teachers need training to use the software effectively and simulations may have errors.

Model and Simulation
O Model
Representation of the construction and
working of a system.
To test the success of a system
To test the effect after system changes
O Simulation
Operation of model of a system.
Can be studied.
Can be improved.
Introduction about
STELLA
O STELLA System Thinking Experimental
Learning Laboratory with Animation
O Introduced by Barry Richmond ( 1985 )
O A software that can be used to stimulate
a system over time
O Through this software, we can see the
effect of a system in a model.
O Provide a practical way to visualize on
how complex system work.
The things that you need to know
before understanding the graph.

O This ecosystem involve about 100 hectare oil

palm plantation
O Which consist of 138 oil palm tree per hectare.
O Each oil palm tree have 10 bunches.
O Whole total 207, 000, 000 palm seed
O The prey is mouse ( Peter Pettigrew ) in pink
line
O The predator is owl ( Hedwig ) in blue line
O The red line is for the mighty oil palm tree

Advantages
O It is the best picture to show how the system work over time.
O Provide risk free environment. Can repeat the experiment
more than 1 time if they failed to get satisfied outcome. (The
graph)
O Give the students motivation to approach the behavior of a
system without building the model.
O Simulation develops problem solving and higher thinking
skills among students
O Build up social manner among students and teacher through
interactions.
O Allow experiment exploration. ( Student can alter the
provided parameter and variables when using it)
O Avoid misconception with what their teacher want to teach.
Especially in science concept that most students cannot
understand well.
Disadvantages
O The teacher need to have a deep learning
about this software before teach the
students. ( Time consuming to explore the
course chosen )
O Some school lack of facilities and equipment.
O Students lack with manual science process
skills.
O Some of simulation need high cost to build
up.
O Simulation may be error.
